Volatile Forms
Dead Void
The formula of playing Doom Death Metal isn't unknown: it's the fusion of slow paced tempos, grunts and a whole morbid ambience with a clear Death Metal appeal. Obviously, this formula can be expanded as the musicians want to do things in a different way (what the pioneers of the genre as PARADISE LOST, MY DYING BRIDE and ANATHEMA did on the early works), but these elements are the usual ones heard on releases of the genre. And they can be found on "Volatile Forms", the first full length of the Danish trio DEAD VOID.
It's not hard to say that they work on a trench similar to what was heard on works as "Lost Paradise", "Serenades" or "As the Flower Withers": the pure and embryonic stage of Doom Death Metal, the genre in its classic form possible. Of course the erosion of the formula due the years of use and abuse is clear, but in the hands of the band, it gains life, based on simple technical approach and brutal to the bones. It's obvious that "Volatile Forms" isn't the newest thing in the world, but's really very good to hear their musical expression, and even needing some maturing, they have a promising work, full of energy, bitter and really aggressive. The production worked on a way that provides the band with a bitter and somber sonority, keeping the simple and nasty appeal of the genre in its early years of existence. But even being brutal and aggressive (due the instrumental tunes used), it allows the listeners to understand the band's musical expression clearly.
The album brings 5 long songs that will be a delight to Doom Death Metal fans, and even for those addicted on classic Death Metal. And a taste on what is presented on songs as "Atrophy" (an oppressive ambience based on slow rhythms and a heavy work of bass guitar and drums), "Sadistic Mind" (a good and dynamic playing of the guitars, creating morbid and aggressive ambiences, and presenting sickening solos), and "The Reptilian Drive" (where some CELTIC FROST influences arises on the guitar riffs, and with nasty cave grunts filling the spaces) are the best ones for a first dive into their brutal world. As mentioned above, DEAD VOID needs to mature their musical work a bit more, but "Volatile Forms" is really a very good album.
