Dead Summer Society - Decades album cover

DEAD SUMMER SOCIETY is a solo-project from Italy, founded by Emiliano Santoro (aka Mist) after several musical experiences. "Decades" is the project's third album, its spirit is permeated by a kind of subtle nostalgia and melancholy, yearning for memories and wandering somewhere on Post-Black paths. The album contains six tracks. "When I Gaze at you Through  Decades" leads off the album. It opens with a melancholy set of clean rhythms, along with some background layers. Deadly Black Metal vocals cut against the sorrowful sounds. It waxes and wanes several times throughout. Cold winds howl as the sound drops towards the end.

"Inner Weather" begins with a combination of clean and distorted guitars. The despondent tones really come through strong here. The sounds drops again just after the half-way mark, to clean strums, clean harmonized vocals and a feeling of loneliness. Distortion returns, along with hardened vocals. "Cold" opens with some light rain and thunder. It takes a bit to get going, then the drums are off and galloping. Female clean vocals appear again. It takes on a more desperate sound as it rolls along...as if the whole world was ending soon, and your failure to live your best life will forever haunt you.

"Rain" begins with clean guitars and just a smidgeon of hope. Following a harsh vocal passage, clean female vocals again come into play. Their voices are both charming and sad, and you can feel the rain slowly begin to soak you cold to the bone. "Distant" begins with clean guitars interwoven with distorted guitars and harsh male vocal passages. Bass guitar keeps some of the melody here, which is downtrodden and murky. "Endless Season" closes the album. Opening with clean guitars and a bit of background ambiance, leading to hopeless wails in the vocals, along with a slow, spreading skies of grey. Transitioning to a stronger sound, it finishes on a note of dejection that will gut you.

Overall, this six-track album has some repetitiveness to it, though the landscape is very lonely and sad...something that comes through strong in the music. It's a perfect soundtrack for the first cold October day in the Northeast United States, with steady wind gusts and grey skies. These kind of albums never make you feel better, but rather display the darker sides of life, which cannot be swept under the rug.
