DAMNATION GALLERY is a Horror Metal band based out of Genova, Italy. The band was formed in 2016 from the ashes of INSANITY HAZARD and STAG and reflects the will of Luca Scovazzi (Low), Edoardo Napoli (Lord Edgard), Francesca Queirolo (Scarlet) and Federico Nascosi (Naskull) to freely express their creative talent. Being relegated to a stale musical formula for too long, they decided to turn the page and to give life to a musical horror scenario, topped by the personal tastes of each member. The album contains nine tracks.

"Edge of a Broken Time" features snarly vocals with an edge, but the music is fairly bland. The riffing is somewhat trite, and you have heard them before for sure. The music is somewhat harrowing, but I'm having a hard time figuring out if the band is serious about their genre. "Hunting Night" opens with some frightening sounds and whispered vocals that turn to harsh vocals. Again, the riffing is simple here. It takes a pause after the half-way mark to build some ambiance, then it's back to the original sound. At times, the vocals do not sound connected to the music.

"Nbaya" opens with some spoken words, and then an energetic riff comes out of nowhere. The dancing bass notes can be clearly heard, along with agonizing screams. This song at least has some darker elements and is done nicely. "Eclipse of Mind" opens with a SABBATH-esque riff that is again unfortunately simple in scope. The vocals are guttural here and it makes more sense with the direction of the music. "Inferno" opens with a thicker guitar riff and some double/quad kick drumming, to go along with the guttural vocals of Scarlet. She varies her vocal technique throughout the song here, but it's her clean vocals that don't always follow the music. The riffing is well done here, however.

"The Unnamed" is over seven-minutes in length. It features a faster-moving pace with some delightful bass guitar notes and the music hangs tensely in the air. The riff changes here and there, bring some variegate to the table. There is even a nice little clean guitar passage to help break up some of the angst. "Angoscia" is a slow, grinding song with guttural vocals, followed by snarly ones that turn to screams at times. I'm just not sure this style meshes much for me. I do however like that secondary riff that appears around the half-way mark.

"White Lines" is a shorter song on the album, opening with another fairly simple riff and a scream. It's when she goes for upper ranges that she loses me. She immediately goes out of key with the riff. "Iceburg" closes the album, and seven-and-a-half minutes in length. It opens with a slow groove, followed by some quiet verses, with just bass, vocals and drums. Once the main riff kicks in, it goes deep and darker. It picks up towards the half-way mark, and the dual harmonic leads are a nice touch.

Overall, another puzzling album to me. Scarlet has a nice, diverse range in her vocals that she applies are various times, and it's clear that she and bassist Low are good at what they do. But the guitar riffing was just too simple for me, and there was definitely a disconnect between the vocals and the music in every song, which just rubbed me the wrong way. I'm just not sure the band met their collective target here on this album. Maybe next time they will find the right path.
