The North American Death Metal was born and developed in a very organic and spontaneous way in the first half of the 80s. It was born as an extreme point of view on playing Thrash Metal (there was a kind of ‘competition’ into Thrash Metal scene to be the most fast and extreme band possible on those days), with the addiction of Hardcore influences (D.R.I., S.O.D., CRO-MAGS, AGNOSTIC FRONT and others had a huge impact on North American extreme Metal scene back then). It means that things evolved without any control or limits (what came in the future), and “Corpus Offal”, the first full-length of the Austin-based quartet CORPUS OFFAL. And these Texans have a lot to say, indeed.

Billy Anderson (who did the production along with the band, and the sound engineering too, with everything done at Jackpot! Recording Studio/Everything Hz) and Dan Lowndes (mastering, who did his duties at Resonance Sound) shaped the band’s music into a sound model usual for Death Metal acts: distorted, raw and full of an aggressive impact, but allowing things to be understood by the fans. And the Karina Monzon (artwork) and Dan Fried (layout) artwork is something sinister and ominous that calls the fans’ attention.

Brutal and full of energy, the music of the band is a form of Death Metal that can’t be said traditional, because regarding the use of traditional elements, the band shows some improvements on the instrumental parts, some technical care on many parts (especially on “Corpus Offal”, where some touches of groove can be heard as well), and unmeasurable brutality (as heard on “Spinous Forms of Mortal Abhorrence”, with low death growls in a different form). Very good instrumental parts, low grunts and snarls, solid song with energy and technique, so be prepared, because it’s a ear-bleeding release, indeed. After the intro “(Into) Purging Creation”, all the band’s songs use long time lengths, but as “Spinous Forms of Mortal Abhorrence”, “Essence of Dissolution”, “Corpus Offal”, “Gorging Gastric Decedent”, “Ripened Psychosis” and “Secreted Effluence (Spilling)” will leave no doubts about their potential and talent. To be honest, the quartet is courageous to present their work in such form.

“Corpus Offal” is a release for fans that are into works of acts as IMMOLATION, INCANTATION, NILE and others. But for Death Metal fans, CORPUS OFFAL is a name to be followed with attention.
