Corpsegrinder is one of Death Metal's most well known figures, as he is the frontman for the blood and gore merchants known as CANNIBAL CORPSE, a band whom he has been with for the better part of thirty years at this point. Stepping in for fan favorite Chris Barnes was no easy feat, but Corpsegrinder has done an incredible job since day one.
Also featured on the album are Dee Snider and ex-TOXIC HOLOCAUST members Charlie and Nick Bellmore; Nick also co-produced the album with HATEBREED singer, and Perseverance Music Group owner, Jamey Jasta.
The ten tracks on 'Corpsegrinder" are filled with gore soaked lyrical content, finding a niche somewhere between Death Metal, Thrash, and the pulverizing power of Hardcore. For example, the track named "On Wings of Carnage" alternates between hardcore riffing, and Death Metal supremacy; it could easily have been on any HATEBREED album in terms of the musical approach. "Death is the Only Key" also follows this formula, and both rank high on the album.
Personally, I feel the best track is also the first single, "Acid Vat". This one features current CANNIBAL CORPSE guitarist, Erik Rutan, a man who's playing on MORBID ANGEL's 1995 album, "Domination," was the fuel for many young Death Metal fans' sore necks. "Acid Vat" is everything we love about Death Metal, crushing riffs mixed with blinding speed. Surprisingly, this is the only track that sounds like CANNIBAL CORPSE, which helps the album truly feel like a solo outing, and not just "that guy from CANNIBAL Corpsegrinder," something that can be detrimental on other artist's solo albums.
Closing out this incredible record is the short song, "Vaguely Human". If these guys meant to end the album on a high note, then they most assuredly succeeded; this is straight up Death Metal at its best!!!!
Last but certainly not least, we need to bring up the performances by Corpsegrinder himself. After several full listens, I can safely say that he has never sounded better. But that's the thing with his vocals, he seems to get better as time ticks by, and his vocals never fail to hit every sweet spot in this style of singing.
Chris Barnes was recently quoted as saying, "Every Death Metal singer sucks, except me"; however, Chris has also claimed that the Facebook account where it originated is an impostor. Either way, if he did make that claim, I'd only offer up one word ... Corpsegrinder.
