The Portugese Metal scene evolved like many others throughout the world: in silence for the world, but making a lot of noise in its boundaries. And after MOONSPELL came and show the Lusitanian strength of Metal bands from those lands, the scene exploded and the world came to know that the lands from the brave navigators of XVI century is fertile for good Metal names. And COLOSSO, from the city of Porto, comes storming with their latest release, the EP "Apocalypse".

Their music is a mix between Progressive/Technical Death Metal and some Groove Metal elements. So it sounds modern and courageous enough to break rules and expand limits, because their music uses some modern Metal elements, but it's abrasive and experimentally chaotic in some parts (and some clean moments can be heard in some songs, as on the beginning of "War"), so it can be complex for those that aren't into such musical format. But it's really good, aggressive and heavy. Max Tomé did the mastering and mixing of the songs of "Apocalypse", creating something clean and modern, but always having in mind that the instrumental tunes used by the band must be brutal and oppressive (it's a Death Metal release, after all), so it shows a very good blend between both needed aspects.

The four songs of the album represent the Four Riders of Apocalypse, and each one of the tracks presents a different singer, what brought an ample range of musical aspects for the EP. "Pestilence" is long and chaotic, filled with some keyboards parts, and the slow rhythm turns the song as bitter as Hell; on "War", brutality and technical refinement walk hand in hand, in a modern Death Metal catharsis; the same nasty and violent elements from the previous songs contrasts with an hypnotic feeling and the clean vocal tunes of "Death" (that shows a very good set of guitar riffs); and "Famine" comes storming with nasty and bitter ambiances, enriched by great parts of bass guitar and drums, along with low tuned grunts and shrieks.

The band is experienced, shows talent, and the chaotic approach is very good (although such experimentalism can cause lack of understanding from old school Death Metal fans), but COLOSSO is another hidden treasure from Portugal. Hear "Apocalypse" and decide for yourselves!
