The Unwritten Pages of Death

Coldborn

This was an excellent album that painted both a bleak and angry picture of life, and elements of Black Metal and Doom mixed together in a stew that is icy and bitter. The more bites you take, the worse it makes you feel, and slowly you are transformed into something that you come to despise, and that the outside world averts.

From Bandcamp, “As the album unfolds, so does the narrative of death's unwritten pages, each track a testament to the inevitability of oblivion. While firmly rooted in black metal, the album is full of variation ranging from fast-paced blasts to doom-like passages and everything in between. The riffs pay homage to the iconic black metal bands of the 90s that shaped the genre, all the while carving out their own distinct trajectory. To create that extra layer of atmosphere, the songs are adorned with evocative acoustic & lead guitars and subtle synths.”

The album has eight songs, and “Foreboding” is first; a short intro that segues into “Silenced is the Choir of Euphoria.” The mood is oppressive, and angry, as drums roll forward with purpose, and vocal screams fill the thick air. There are some softer, more introspective passages as well. “Cold Void Rife” goes deeper into the earth with cold, solemn tones that lash out in anger at times. The second, clean vocal passage that mixes in with the harsh vocals makes the song sound even more evil. “The Antechamber of Eternal Sleep” has a thicker and more traditional Black Metal sound. The drums roll at quadruple speed and the rest of the song moves very quickly.

“Harps of Death Chiming Reverberant” begins with some ominous atmosphere, and what is coming you can almost taste. When the sound breaks, it is heavy, contentious, and slow moving, with audible bass notes and a very deep bottom end. “Cornucopia Hungers for More” is another slow moving song, with a lot of somber qualities, and that second voice is there again, making the sound very harrowing and hopeless. “Life’s Aureole No Longer Gleaming” comes out of the gate with a brutal and aggressive sound, where the vocal screams and energy don’t let up. The somber piano notes are nice as well. “A Spectral Dance of Midnight Sorrow” closes the album. It is a sober reminder of how cold life can be, and the guttural vocals reflect this well.

This was an excellent album that painted both a bleak and angry picture of life, and elements of Black Metal and Doom mixed together in a stew that is icy and bitter. The more bites you take, the worse it makes you feel, and slowly you are transformed into something that you come to despise, and that the outside world averts.
