Big Trouble
Coffin Feeder

The first thing I need to do concerning COFFIN FEEDER is attract your attention to the very colourful cover, an animation that contains just about every action movie hero that has been on your big screen in the last 40 odd years. I love it, but I can’t help wondering whether this will cause problems with the bog movie corporations. Because the contents of the drawing does fit the contents of the music that this Belgian supergroup is having us listen to. Supergroup? Yes, if you have members of LENG TCH’E, FLEDDY MELCULY, ABORTED and WHEN PLAGUES COLLIDE in your midst, you can be classed just that. These guys started in 2021, having their homestead in Waregem, in West Flanders. Until now they released two EP’s (“Stereo Homicide” and “Over The Top”) in 2022 and now, some three years later, it is time for a debut full-length album. The result is “Big Trouble”.
There are five letters that describe COFFIN FEEDER perfectly, the are the H, E, A, V and Y! Because this is 35 minutes of what I would call ultra heavy Brutal Death Metal, but is classed by the Metal Archives as Deathcore. Just so you know, this is extremely heavy. Oh, and bloody good. For those who remember how heavy the opening of the debut album of MACHINE HEAD (“Burn My Eyes”) was, this has the same impact, only with a lot more Extreme Metal accompanying it. It becomes very clear that the quality of the songs reflects the quality of the players and how the sum of the total is even higher than you would expect. I for one was not expecting to loving “Big Trouble” so much. It does take some time if you are not a Deathcore afficionado, but once you open yourself up to all the music trying to beat you down and reduced your ears and brain to pulp, you can’t help but admire what is being played.
COFFIN FEEDER is indeed “Big Trouble”, as they are making me like another musical genre that I have been able to leave at the sidelines until now. But I do know that if I wish to admire a Deathcore band from now on, they have to come close or exceed the quality of COFFIN FEEDER. And that, my friends, is something a lot of the bands trying will not be able to do, because I feel that the 35 minutes of “Big Trouble” is at the top of the Deathcore game. For me that comes from the fact that I feel a very strong connection the Brutal Death Metal and sometimes even Grindcore shining through. It makes the listening experience very divers and extremely pleasurable.
