On The Mirror
Cocaine Moustache
Listening to this hazy album made me ask myself numerous times: How indistinct can a band really be with its music? What are the limits of being exceedingly doped and drunken with freedom? Maybe I should have cleared the last questions because being doped and high from lack of restrictions is something good and everyone should pamper it as much as they can. Producer Rob Shallcross, of Reversed Records, ensured that another band will remain high on free will for as much as they want. COCAINE MOUSTACHE hailed to the worldwide scene in order to free it from its generic nature and its dull everyday life. Following obscurities made in several musical grounds such as Rock, Metal, Funk and Punk all in the name of partying and grooving around, a strong sense of diversity became their middle name and their sin, at least as far as their debut album, "On The Mirror", is concerned.
"On The Mirror", alongside its absence of clarity, paved through twists and turns of brutal assaulting grooves to 70s Bluesy riffing and tight grumbles in the vein of old BLACK SABBATH lifted up by late 90s accommodations of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY and PANTERA bearing the skin of late era of THE CULT. On the other hand, I don't think that I have too many bands in order to lay down a whole picture of COCAINE MOUSTACHE's music, therefore I will stop right here. As for facts, this album is running fast forward with almost no stops. The constant motion is the high octane exchange of genres without a dull moment in between. "The Pledge", smeared with a twisted lyrical sense that crossed between something that looks stupid to the pleasures of the flesh, slacking with a small section of acoustic Southern Rock verse only to take things up to the next level with concentrated pack of intense grooves and slobbering vocals by the no less than an actor, White Willie Sniffsum. However, what I think that will really be an eye opener is the lead guitar section, whether its Bill Rollins or Schnick Von-Schlutzzz, its beyond amazing. Beyond "The Pledge", this twosome axeman is plainly marvellous with high flying soloing that one could actually feel that passion that these guys share for their creations. "Out Of My Hands", "The Drip" and "Bleed My Last Breath" are crunchy, weary renegades against the normality of music, as I mentioned earlier, nothing can exceed how fast these guys shift between their influences. Though I believe that Metal is still dominant within this crew, more than ever the groovy kind. "Cocaine Moustache" is the anthem of anthems, a drunken salute to the world that these guys don't really care what you think of them. You either be stoned with them or stay sober out of their territory. So get loose, get doped and boozed up and head right in. If not, you can enjoy the music and the constant build up of the songs.
"On The Mirror" reflects the encounter against the usually things in life, other than music. COCAINE MOUSTACHE show their own world in the land of the free time, piled up in alcohol, with strapping emotions when it comes to conserving their freedom. For the open minded that don't care on having their Metal mixed with various of erstwhile genres, including hardened Soul music (yes I wrote that), this one is a must. So what is your next move?
