Sadistic Storm
Cimmerian Possession
Mexico is a Land of the Brave for Metalheads, because the shows are always full of fans, and they really love music. So it's expected that the ancient lands where Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca and Huitzilopochtli were adored in the past must have a strong Metal scene. Maybe this can't be checked by this writer (unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to see it in a live experience), but due what is expressed in "Sadistic Storm", the first release of the trio CIMMERIAN POSSESSION, things are really blasting there.
They're an Old School Death Metal act, but not laying their efforts solely in the clichés used by many to emulate the music of the 90's. No, these guys take all those elements, fuses with nasty influences of Thrash/Black Metal and creates something that, if can't be said as new, it's full of energy and valuable. It's nasty, aggressive, and full of a hooking and insane set of classic Death/Black Metal hooks inherited from Hardcore/Punk Rock. It's impossible to not surrender to the trio's music. The sonority, as can be expected, has a putrid and crude appeal, making the ambience oppressive as Hell. But it doesn't mean that things can't be understood clearly, it's the opposite. This aggressiveness flows from the instrumental tunes used by the band.
"Castles" is a fine sample of Old School Death/Black Metal, with simple and efficient rhythmic changes (the influences of CELTIC FROST are clear to the ears in many moments, especially on bass guitar and drums); the same happens on "Flames", a song filled with a nasty and oppressive aggressive insight, with Old School blast beats and nasty guttural grunts; "The Wrathful" shows some nasty and contrasts of tempos (between fast and slow moments), with a brutal support of bass guitar and drums and some charming extreme hooks. And "Bringer of Night (Noctifer)" brings some simple technical insight, but filled with nasty and catchy guitar riffs and arrangements. And the fans will keep asking why the blazes this release isn't a full album instead of a 4-songs EP.
Yes, one can think that CIMMERIAN POSSESSION still has to mature a bit more, but what they deliver on "Sadistic Storm" shows a promising band from the Mexican scene.
