Chelsea Grin - Suffer In Heaven album cover

CHELSEA GRIN hailing from Salt Lake City, Utah were formed in 2007 originally as AHAZIAH. The Deathcore outfit play under CHELSEA GRIN since 2009 and released so far two EPs and six full-length albums. Their seventh release "Suffer In Heaven" was originally planned as double album, however, part one "Suffer In Hell" was released in 2022 already. Part two "Suffer In Heaven" has a length of 27 minutes, and it was released via US distributor ONErpm Records.

The continuation of "Suffer In Hell" starts with "Leave With Us" and it starts with a short atmospheric and dark pre-lude, before thunderous guitar riffs and crunching bass lines at down-tempo take over. The grim atmosphere is present during the whole track. "Leave With Us" is a deadly delivery of great riffing and growling vocals straight from the abyss. The versatility of the growling and the abrupt tonal shifts from deep-lying grows to highly pitched screams gives "Leave With Us" an extra dimension. The huge breakdown at the end of the track is an extra bonus. "Orc March" starts with a short intro providing the sound framework. The song includes a bit of electronic sampling contributing well to spine-chilling atmosphere. The vocals are a mixture of low growls and higher pitched screams, where the low growls are slightly more dominant. "Fathomless Maw" has less darkness and more aggression. It is one of the faster songs with aggressive riffing and drumming. The sound framework has a few oriental vibes at times, in particular during the lead guitar solo. Highlight is another huge breakdown. "Fathomless Maw" is the official video release, and the YouTube link is provided below.

"Soul Slave" starts with a few electronic effects, before the merciless combination of bludgeoning riffing and hammering bass lines takes over and leads into a two-minute Deathcore assault driven by countless twists in rhythm and tempo. As most tracks, "The Mind Of God" starts with a short intro to the melodic framework. The melodies have a lot of melancholy throughout the track. The tempo is fast for most parts, but the track comes with many changes in rhythm and pace. Highlight of the song is, besides the rare lead guitar solo, the relentless drumming of Nathan Pearson. "Yhorm The Giant" continues with the slightly melancholic melodic framework again with a few oriental vibes, but within the more traditional Deathcore setting of riffing at down-tempo. The focus is put more on creating atmosphere and less on twists and turns in rhythm.

"Sing To The Grave" starts with a huge scream transitioning into another series of crushing riffs and basslines often mixed with electronic samples. The mixture of bone-shaking screams and growls straight from hell drives the track, mostly at mid-tempo. The album finishes with "The Path To Suffering" and the spine-chilling intro is the opening of a track which has all the ingredients to be an excellent Deathcore track: the roar of the riffs, the thunder of the bass, the pummeling drums, and mixture of screams and growls. The track comes with another excellent oriental inspired lead guitar solo, and it finishes with an atmosphere-laden finale.

CHELSEA GRIN deliver a masterclass of modern Deathcore. "Suffer In Heaven" combines all the elements of what Deathcore fans love so much: the thunderous riffing, the crushing bass lines, the spine-chilling atmosphere, the twists in rhythm, the screams and growls straight from hell, and the huge breakdowns. The album contains all that in a very smart mixture to keep the album fresh and dynamic. The album is very well produced. CHELSEA GRIN set the bar very high for all the Deathcore releases to come this year and I would not be surprised if "Suffer In Heaven" would appear in various Best of 2023 album lists.
