CHAMBER OF TORTURE is a death metal outfit, based out of Russia who started out back in 2010. They have released a certain number of albums over the years (3 to be exact) with their latest released entitled "Necrodomain" being their 4th full-length album since 2012. The album itself contains 8 songs, spanning a bit under 25 minutes. It was released through the Eclectic Productions label on November 15th, 2019.
The album does not dwell in instrumentals or long-winded intros, it starts off with some guttural vocals right away in "Shriveled Stump", the style does resemble a bit Chris Barnes (SIX FEET UNDER). The song varies in doomier passages to very old-school Swedish death metal parts with the typical drum pattern that increases when necessary. The track even has a nice solo in there showing off the technical skills of their guitarist (not sure which one actually plays the solos). A solid opener.
"Necrocarnage Spree" brought be back to 1994 and CANNIBAL CORPSE's musical peak. It really flows that pattern in the low-tone guitars. The added touch however here are the high-pitch screams. We get some dissonance in the "solo" as well, which differs a lot from what we hear in the first track. This is a straight-ahead, punch to the face juggernaut, from start to finish! The song's slower parts are a nice throwback to all the death metal projects in the 90's, who were looking for some melancholy in their riffs. The bassist shows off some nice moves in this one as well.
"Degenerated" starts with some spoken word dialogue, followed by pounding bass /drums pattern. It has an efficient slower riff repeated throughout the song. One that is very easy to follow and should have your head banging instantly. I wouldn't call the song a standout, but its structure, even though predictable, has a darker tone than what I would have expected from such a project. "Bog of Decayed" has another bass pounding introduction, that really seems to be their go-to style, which works extremely well, but this song has some very odd effects in the vocals (making them almost completely impossible to decipher), adding even more depth to very guttural vocals to start with. This song could play in a zombie apocalypse movie! The tempo also drastically changes around the 2-minute mark to a much more thrashier ENTOMBED style.
"Consecrated Ground" goes back to the CANNIBAL CORPSE-style again with the rapid drums and the chaotic rhythm/solo guitar parts. This 90's style of death metal has always been one of my favorites. Needless to say, this song really stood out for me on the album. "Human Fertilizer" is a heavy number, while slower than its predecessor, captures the essence of gritty death metal perfectly. A song that just loves to grind you down and hit you in the heart with its powerful bass. It again transitions wonderfully to a thrashier portion about halfway through the song.
The title track "Necrodomain" and "Zombiecide" follow similar structures, not only in the delivery, but in the slower parts combined with DISMEMBER-style riffing and drumming. The title track has some whispered clean vocals however that were not present in any of the other songs.
Overall, there isn't a bad song on the album. Clearly there was no filler added and every song deserves to be on here. The production is dirty, the way it should be for this style of death metal. The vocals are on point throughout the album and the technical aspects of bass and guitars are shown off very well, without going overboard. If you like your death metal short and sweet, I definitely recommend you give this album a spin!
