The Swedish Death machines are priming for war, preparing for an invasion. This November sees the release of a much anticipated album in the Death Metal genre: "Redeeming Filth", the ninth full-length album by Death Metallers CENTINEX, who were founded nearly a quarter of a century ago, but who have spent the last eight years in hiatus. And with the return of CENTINEX, we also witness a regression in sound, with the band going back to their roots on this new release. This nostalgia is further enhanced by featured appearances by a number of guests, including Kennet Englund, a former drummer of CENTINEX. Riff-laden and old school, this album brings to mind masters of old, such as UNLEASHED and OBITUARY, and as an extra treat for collectors, CENTINEX are also releasing a vinyl version of the album, limited to 100 hand-numbered copies; something to drool over indeed!
This album seeps with unharnessed power and brutality, with each of the ten tracks being a pounding, relentless, roiling mass of pure Death, from the opener "When Bodies Are Deformed" right to the final "Eye Sockets Empty". I particularly liked "Moist Purple Skin": infusing neck-breakingly paced riffs with slower and groovier refrains, I have a feeling this is going to become an instant crowd pleaser. It is everything and more that you could wish from a Death Metal track, with guttural growls that send shivers down your spine, down to the chunky and ominous sounding guitars. The drum work in "Death Glance" is superb, adding vast dimensions of brutality and ruthlessness to the already inhuman song, whilst the bass is very much outstanding in "Stone Of Choice". What I really appreciate about this album is that CENTINEX work as a coherent whole throughout the album, yet still make sure to let each instrument into the fore at certain parts of the album, thereby allowing the unique contributions of these talented musicians to shine through.
With the release of "Redeeming Filth", CENTINEX have come back to show the world what these veterans are really capable of, and I can very well see this album topping the list "Best of 2014" lists of many a Death Metal fan. This revival sees CENTINEX at the pinnacle of their game, ready to set forth and take the Metal world by storm, with a number of festival appearances already confirmed. If you're planning on catching one of these shows, I recommend getting a neck brace beforehand: CENTINEX have distilled the very essence of all that is Death Metal, and are guaranteed to break necks at their upcoming performances!
In short, this is a definite "must have" not only for CENTINEX fans, but also for those fans of the older Death Metal genre in general. And for those who just can't wait, check out the pre-listening at Agonia Records.
