Nordic Gothic

Cemetery Skyline

The album opened up a sense of wonder with music that I haven’t felt for some time. The songwriting duo of Markus Vanhala and Santeri Kallio was as strong as Mikael’s vocals. The songs were beautifully executed, and many of them were very moving. It just left me with a sense of warmth and satisfaction.

From Bandcamp, “"We all share a deep love for goth rock from the 80s and 90s - whether it's more synth-driven or heavier guitar-dominated stuff, says Santeri Kallio, who shares songwriting duties with Markus Vanhala. "But is CEMETERY SKYLINE a goth band? Maybe to an extent, but that's certainly not the whole story. If you have to describe CEMETERY SKYLINE's diverse music somehow, do us a favor and call us ambassadors of melodic, melancholic and dark rock.” The album has ten songs. “Torn Away” is first, and the Gothic aesthetic is proper from the first few notes. The music is smooth, energetic, catchy, and Mikael’s clean vocals are quite fitting. The piano notes augment what is already a strong sound. “In Darkness” has another catchy riff that chugs away underneath emotive vocals and a chorus full of harmonies. There is also a nice balance maintained between guitar and keyboards. Sometimes, these side projects are hard to get off the ground but obviously not this one. “Violent Storm” has more darkness and weight behind it, but not at the expense of the melody, which remains in the forefront of the band’s sound.

“When Silence Speaks” features a lovely dose of tender piano notes, followed by some pure emotion in both the vocals and the music. The key change brings even more feelings with it. “The Darkest Night” reminds me of the pure magic and love of a band like HIM. The riff and piano impart a positive energy on the listener, and the lyrics are moving. “Never Look Back” is a tender song about resolve…and it has another big, catchy chorus. For me, it’s the piano and keyboards that make this song as good as it is, along with Markus’ lead guitar notes. “The Coldest Heart” is a slower song with a heavy backbone, and the chunky riff combines with gentle piano notes that lead to a powerful chorus. “Alone Together” closes the album. It’s a lengthy offering that is full of emotion. “I don’t want to be left here without a sense of clear direction, and the cause of this constant tension” he sings. This song gave me goosebumps, and it is so pretty, it makes your heart ache. For me, the album opened up a sense of wonder with music that I haven’t felt for some time. The songwriting duo of Markus Vanhala and Santeri Kallio was as strong as Mikael’s vocals. The songs were beautifully executed, and many of them were very moving.
