Carcariass - Afterworld album cover

From Bandcamp, "CARCARIASS is a Metal band from France. The music of CARCARIASS goes from Death Metal to Heavy Metal, and is a powerful and melodic music with many instrumental passages that follow each other with extreme fluidity. The name CARCARIASS comes from Carcharodon Carcharias, the Latin name of the Great White Shark. Their sixth studio album here has ten songs. "No Aftermath" is the first. The electronics and guitars in the opening sequence are quite pleasing. The vocals are raspy screams, there is a downtrodden feeling to the song, but the song is fairly catchy as well. "Billions of Suns" has more of those charming electronic elements. So far, the band strung together two interesting songs with great hooks.

"Identity" has some really nice guitar work in the beginning, augmented by a steady dose of keys. Positive elements shine through until the harsh vocals grey the clouds. The band has a way with melody, even though the transitions between the elements are somewhat sharp. "Angst" has some Gothic qualities to it, in the even tempered riff and especially from the clean vocals. Ominous tones spring forth as well, and again, it's a very catchy song that you can sing along with. "Black Rain" is a faster and more aggressive song, but still with a good deal of melody. This is an interesting combination of genres that I haven't heard before. "The Hive" is a heavier song with more discontent. Thick bass notes play well with the rhythms, and it gets chugging in mid-tempo pace.

"Machine Kult" is another song with a strong electronic backbone. The chugging groove is very catchy, and the lead guitar work is excellent. "Afterworld" closes the album. Tense elements hang in the air, but the opening sound is melodic. You get a sense of grandeur in this song, and they play with the meter a bit here and there. The lead guitar work is fantastic as well. Overall, as I mentioned above, this was an interesting combination of a few genres of Metal that I hadn't heard before. The music is catchy, even with the snarling bite of harsh vocals. This is a band that I would keep an eye on going forward, because you never know what might be up their sleeve next.
