Bruxist

This Australian trio unleashes its furious mix between D-Beat and Death Metal in a personal and great way!
September 4, 2025

Death Metal and D-Beat were fused on the past, and then Grindcore was born, but the mixing between both genres can have different outcomes. No one needs to be a ‘slave-of-the-formula’, and everyone can do things on their own. Focusing the attention on the mix between Death Metal and D-Beat (that is a form of Hardcore created by DISCHARGE and became an influence for many Metal acts from the 80s on): if a band do such thing, will it become a Grindcore act? A fine answer is given by the Australian trio BRUXIST on “Bruxist”.

Adam Calaitzis (who recorded the vocals at Toyland), Dav Byrne (the one who record the backing vocals at TVOG and mastered the songs at Iridium Audio) and Jason Fuller (the one who recorded guitars, bass guitar and drums, and who did the mixing as well at Goatsound) worked with the band in studio (this release was recorded live at studio), and the result is a sonority in an Old School fashion, with a rough and distorted sonority with a handmade touch, but with everything defined. It means that’s aggressive and nasty, but understandable, and with a clear organic appeal. And the cover is a piece created by Faizal, depicting clearly the D-Beat influences of the band.

The band fuses elements from D-Beat and Old School Death Metal from the 80s, resulting in a hybrid that’s not Hardcore, Death Metal or Crossover Thrash Metal, but something that has features of all these genres (and more). But if it’s hard to describe in words, it’s simple to hear and love it, because the band doesn’t overload things on the technical aspect of its music. It’s rough and smell to ghettos, but free of constrains and full of energy and excellent hooks.

Spitting its fury on 8 excellent songs that are hard to resist to if you’re into their mix of nasty vocals (not death growls, not shrieks, but an aggressive form of normal tunes), grasping hooking guitar riffs, and solid bass guitar and drums rhythm, it’s easy to love “Inversion”, “Six Feet Headfirst”, “Black Sheep Discipline”, “Wide Awake”, “Piss and Vinegar”, “Revoked”, “Divide and Conquer” and “Hydra”. But if you don’t love it, you’re not into extreme Metal tendencies, or you’re not a Metal fan.

“Bruxist” is a very good release, and the name of BRUXIST will surely transcend Australian borders and reach a worldwide recognition.
