Old School Black Metal bands (both those from the past as those that arises from their crypts today) plays an important whole on Metal: to keep the old expressions of the genre alive and available for both fans and future bands, like passing the torch on to the next generations. The inheritance of MAYHEM, DARKTHRONE, BURZUM, GORGOROTH, BEHERIT, ARCHGOAT, MARDUK, NIFELHEIM, PROFANATICA, JUDAS ISCARIOT, MÜTIILATION, VLAD TEPES, SARCÓFAGO, SONGE D’ENFER and others must be kept alive, and thanks to names as BLUTSAUGER (from Italy), it seems that thinks will be, as hear on “Nocturnal Blood Tyrants”.

After all these years, the sound engineers learned that keep things in a classic way on the sonority doesn’t mean to sound uncomprehensible, and on this release, the fans will have an Old School form of sonority, with those tunes with a lo-fi appeal, but with everything defined. It’s classic, but understandable. The duet (don’t ask me who played the drums) works on a classic form of the Second Wave of Black Metal, with an aggressive and funereal outfit. It’s clear that even keeping things as classic as possible, people will see that they have an ‘alive’ expression, or in other words, they’re not living off what is already done and defined, but use the clichés of the genre to create something personal. It’s old-fashioned and full of energy, with an aggressive and morbid appeal.

There are rhythmic contrasts - even with the band using a simple technical approach - and cutting-edge approaches in all the songs. But for Black Metal fans of the classic ways, “Blood Solstice”, “The Black Hunters”, “Black Shroud Ritual”, “A Plague of Iron and Dust”, “Wrath of the Banshee”, “Nocturnal Blood Tyrants”, “Wash Them With Fire” and “Ausgeblutet” are pleasurable moments full of the spirit of the old days, when Black Metal was feared and hated by many - including Metalheads. But it seems sometimes that they still have potential to sail into unknown waters in the future. As long as some pioneers are getting near of their retirement, “Nocturnal Blood Tyrants” states that the classic forms of Black Metal will be kept alive, because BLUTSAUGER’s name is truly worthy of trust.
