Bloody Falls

For a band who largely relies on only one main ingredient for their brand of Melodic Death Metal, I did find the album nearly exactly as described: Old school meets contemporary. Although my head is still intact, it did take a bit of a beating.

From their EPK, “This five-piece killer combo was formed back in 2017 in the town of Valkeakoski (Finland). Their explosive sound combines all possible elements of the most extreme metal genre, including blasting drums, epic passages and memorable guitar riffs that will make your head explode into a million pieces. Old school meets contemporary elements to create the unique sound of BLOODY FALLS. The album has eight songs.

“Sorrow is My Name” is first. The sound is energetic, and the riffs move quickly. The vocals are entirely harsh, given that sometimes we hear cleans mixed in, but not in this straightforward rocker. “I Will Be Your End” has a similar sound, and I was afraid of that. When a Melodic Death Metal band doesn’t use clean vocals, synths, or any other things to diversify their sound, and rely on riffs, the result can be repetitive. “The Way of Sin” however defeats that notion, with a slower grind and some lead notes that fit the soundtrack much better and provide a harrowing and ominous sound.

“Man Undying” smartly uses a thick backing of harmonized vocals in the chorus. Although the main riff is simple, and the vocals delivered mostly one way, the sound is still interesting. “Evil Incarnate” begins with a slower pace, and thick bass guitar notes accompanying the clean guitar riff. Again, the sound is distinct, and the band keeps offering varied sounds within the genre. “Curse of the Mark” has a bit of a funky swing in the main riff, which is unexpected, and there are finally a bit of clean vocals in the chorus. “I Didn’t Meet My Death” is another grinding offering, where the sound sinks in slowly.

“I Met My Death” closes the album, and in come some supporting symphonic elements to the table. Another memorable riff is also offered. For a band who largely relies on only one main ingredient for their brand of Melodic Death Metal, I did find the album nearly exactly as described: Old school meets contemporary. Although my head is still intact, it did take a bit of a beating.
