Blazon Rite - Dulce Bellum Inexpertis album cover

Epic tales of heroism from years gone by, foot stomping power motifs and a level of imagery that is very reminiscent of a certain MANOWAR. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you BLAZON RITE, a four-piece power metal band plucked it would seem directly from the Power heyday. We have their debut release "Dulce Bellum Inexpertis", for those of you not quite up to par with Latin, a rough translation would be 'war is sweet to the inexperienced'.

The artwork for the EP struck me as a bit of a rip off to be honest, I know that MANOWAR didn't monopolise their imagery, but I am sure that anyone who sees this cover will instantly attribute it to the Power Metal heavyweights.

The opening track, "The Warriors Choice (Take Me Away)" introduces the EP with a drawn out, synth heavy introduction before some pounding rhythms and heavy riffage come flooding through your headphones. The bouncy tracking is catchy and drives forward with gusto. However, I couldn't help but feel the standard of recording was a little bit rough and messy. Which, coupled with some slightly out of sync instrumental sections lowered the standard for me slightly.

"Diamond Daggyr" came together a bit more, the music was tighter and more refined than previously. I could see this being a very enjoyable track to listen to whilst on a long drive, the changes in tempo added some extra depth to the music that I just felt had been lacking up until this point. So, I really hope that we can continue this upward trend as the EP continues.

With a meaty and heavy introduction "Into The Expanse (Solar Portals And Celestial Holes" explodes into reality. Driving the track steadily forward, with pounding rhythms and a misty overtone that cements the mystical and almost fictional reality that appears to be created within BLAZON RITE's music.

The final track "Udug Hul (Summons You)" starts off much gentler, with a soft acoustic introduction before launching a final assault at breakneck speed. As the EP comes to an abrupt end, I can reflect on it. I feel that it was a good first release for the young outfit, although it was slightly rough around the edges there were some glimmers of potential. I hope that BLAZON RITE will find their feet and continue to establish themselves with their own unique stamp.
