From their Facebook page, BISMUT is an instrumental Psych Desert Metal band formed in 2016. From explosive and experimental jam sessions in the caverns of the Nijmegen underground arose BISMUT. Infinite jamming resulted in an oasis of psychedelic excesses, vicious riffing and heavily drawn-out grooves. After their debut performance in November 2016, the three guys played many kick-ass shows in the Netherlands and abroad. The performances of BISMUT are dynamic, intense and straightforward. "Retrocausality" contains six tracks.

"Oscuramento" leads off the album, at thirteen minutes in length. It is fuzzy and psychedelic for sure, as well it has a "free jam" vibe to it. They lay on a main riff for the first few minutes, with bass guitar thumping away, as Nik takes a guitar solo. Around the half-way mark, spacey keys join in the mix, and I get an OZRIC TENTACLES vibe. "Non-Lolaliteit" is equally as long, and moves just a bit faster out of the gates. It slows to a grind around the two-minute mark, lumbering forward at this point. The sound nearly drops altogether around the five-minute mark, slowly re-gaining in sound. "Predvidanie" follows a similar pattern of despondent tones that are just repeated over and over again. They guys are obviously not very interested in experimenting, and neither is the genre in general for that matter. However, this song does have some layers to it.

"Varasaga" opens with slow and hushed tones. It eventually turns darker and a bit angrier, but many of these songs sound nearly the same and there is little variation from track to track. It rides out the length of the song and slows to a near grind at the end. "Vergangenheit" is over 15-minutes in length. At this point in your desert journey, the mushrooms have kicked in and you just want to close your eyes and imagine things you thought were not possible. As it picks up in speed, lead guitar notes are played over a bed of bass notes that are trippy and hypnotic. Suddenly, it gets very heavy with a groovy feeling coming up at the mid-way point of the song, sticking with the plan until completion.

"Antithesis" is a short, three-minutes closer. It allows you to "come down" from the high that the previous tracks provided. Some odd and eerie electronica occupy most of the song. Overall, I have to give the guys credit where credit is due-the jams here are indeed hypnotic, but how many times can you listen to the open E chord on an album? It's that lack of diversity that really doesn't allow the listener much in terms of expectations of some variation, but that is not the genre anyway. Overall, just mediocre for me.
