House of Commando
Bird’s View
The coming of Alternative Rock tendencies in the late years of the 80s caused a massive earthquake on the charts in the USA, because Glam Metal and AOR successful acts started to have problems to deal with the growing commercial success of NIRVANA, PEARL JAM, SCREAMING TREES, being totally expelled from public and media eye. But on the other hand, one can see the Alternative Rock wave as a call for evolution, because today is easier to see how important such trend was for younger acts as BIRD’S VIEW, as heard on “House of Commando”. It’s obvious that one can label their musical work as Alternative Rock, but one can’t deny their frantic electric moments (as heard on “Come Back Home”) or their accessible and melodic appeal (pay attention on the catching melodies on “Vienna”).
Their technical work is simple, focused on creating strong hooking choruses and melodies that are hard to resist to, but one can deny that their rebel Rock ‘n’ Roll spirit is clear on their songs. You can call it Alternative Rock, Stoner Rock (due some elements of the genre presented on many moments), Acid Rock or any other genre you can say: the important is that their music is pretty good. The quartet delivered the songs to be mastered by Howie Weinberg (known for his work with important Alternative Rock acts as NIRVANA, SMASHING PUMPKINS, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, and others). The band’s music sounds savage and fuzzy, but clean and defined in a way that is simple for fans’ understanding. It’s a very good work, indeed.
Frantic and able to make anyone shake the bones to their music, the quartet shows a parade of excellent songs. “Vienna” (with its contrasts of tender melodic parts with frantic guitars during the chorus), “Stay Down” (there’s a clear touch of Funk Rock due the groove imposed by bass guitar and drums on this one), “Pin Drop”, “Circus” (one of the most accessible songs of the album, with excellent melodies and fine vocals), “Came Along”, “More to Come” (the contrasts between screamed moments and tender melodies is excellent), “White Barriers” (another fine mix between razor edged-guitar riffs and melodic energy), “Colorblind” (the Folk Rock touches in the vein of THE BEATLES’ is really amazing) , “Promise Everything” (another fine set of melodies is displayed here), “Come Back Home”, and “What It’s Like” are really very good songs for those that just want to spend a good time while listening to music.
It’s clear such a young band still has more to show in the future, but for now, “House of Commando” is a fine release, proving that BIRD’S VIEW has its place on the scene.
