My dear chief editor Elina has listened to my "needs" and assigned me the latest EP from BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME to review it. Yeah I know, that's the guys I had that old-age nagging about their "weird" name when we were talking about their mastermind's solo effort few months ago.  "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" is an EP of 30 minutes duration which spans in 3 songs and it is the first part of their "The Parallax" project which -probably- a full album will follow soon enough.

BTBAM are known for their diverse compositions, mixing different styles having metalcore as the base musical "ingredient" and then drifting to more progressive sounds. This being my first "contact" with them I must admit I wasn't impressed in the start, given the hype of the press. It is bad for the music itself if you start having "expectations" on what you are about to listen and/or its quality.  BTBAM is really a love/hate band, their songs is hard to "digest", and hard to figure out in terms of music and lyrics. Their talent is really undeniable though, even if what you hear in the start is just a noisy blur with small melodic breaks and violent outbursts.

The three songs that consist the EP, can be interpreted as if they are three intense dreams.  Their constant change of pace and emotions, feels like pieces of a grandeur musical puzzle getting "thrown" to you in random order.  A -hard to understand- musical puzzle. Memories of dreams you "lived" not long ago but you need effort to "recreate" them in your mind.   "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" doesn't give you an easy ride in its turfs. On the contrary, there are times that it doesn't makes sense but isn't that the point of a dream?

Whether you want to indulge to BTBAM's music or not, it is up to you. The hype they are getting it is -almost- true but "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" is really the wrong way to start listening to the band. It is "harsh", "difficult" and "noisy" at times if you are not into metalcore. Check their back catalogue and wait for the second part of "The Parlallax".
