Latome

Bathory Legion

This album was a personal take on what many of us have come to define as “music” in the traditional sense of the word. It was much more experimental, and a dark story lies somewhere within, and at its core, it was very frightening to listen to.

In Greco-Roman antiquity latomie were stone or marble quarries that were used to incarcerate slaves, prisoners of war or criminals in general. Today the term, by extension, can be interpreted as "prison", while also possessing certain occult connotations. However, for BATHORY LEGION, latomie represent places where you die and disappear – or you are reborn stronger.

A violent gun shot rings out over the hustle and bustle of what sounds like a busy shopping area in the intro, followed by some electronic feedback. “Bloodthirsty Darkness” begins with cold, hard, steel tones, and the musings of a demon voice, no doubt up to nefarious activities. Through two tracks now, this isn’t your average album…there is very little in the way of what one could call music. “The Play Game” is another heavily sampled track, and the steady, fast drum beat sounds like a swarm of bees, or something out of the movie Hostel. Harrowing images of torture flood through my mind.

“Bloodthirsty Darkness II” has fuzzy feedback and a background filled with more scary images. It’s obvious at this point in the album that the band’s take on music is much more avant garde in nature. “In His Own Words [T.K.]” has a slow, hypnotic beat and some spoke words, talking about being afraid of pain and death, and much of the feedback in the song sounds like tortured screams to me. “Resonating Pandemonium” is full on with effects, including a phaser and other elements with give the song a hardened, metallic quality to it. Again, some of them sound like vocals to me…frightening vocals.

“LCC” has much more subdued sampling, almost as if the album is going to end with a bang. “Outro” closes the album. That it does. A warning siren blasts over people scrambling to storm a building. More alarms sound, and drown out nearly all of the conversation. You can make out “shots fired” followed by many gun blasts. The officer yells “stop moving!” and the song ends.  This album was a personal take on what many of us have come to define as “music” in the traditional sense of the word. It was much more experimental, and a dark story lies somewhere within, and at its core, it was very frightening to listen to.
