Italian Heavy Psych trio B.B.F. have returned with their sophomore release, "Outside The Noise" on Argonauta Records. The band indicates that following their debut release, "Beside Everything We Need 70's", they entered a period of tremendous introspection. As a result, they came to realize their path as musicians and appropriately saw their sound begin to mature more and more as songs evolved that would become "Outside The Noise". The trio barricaded themselves in a desolate and isolated studio near their home to record this new conceptual assembly of songs with the hope of helping others develop a greater sense of body and mind.
The release begins with the chilling "Sgt. Pepperish" vibe of "Apollo" including a recorded vocal sample from the Apollo 11 moon landing. Then, nearly unbelievably, a southern rock guitar vibe straight out of the MARSHALL TUCKER BAND songbook kicks things off in earnest with "Third Eye", then jetting off into an abstract garage rock cacophony before grounding on terra firm once again. There is that constant theme throughout, whether it's a punk feel ("Time") PINK FLOYD ("Outside The Noise"), or even COLDPLAY, ("Into The Light") the abstract explorations are always there.
Favorite tracks for me were, "Into The Light", "Kaleidoscope" ,"Sun" and the ghost track, "Harvest Moon". In all honesty, this album has me perplexed. There's a part of me that absolutely loves it, while at the same time it pisses me off and leaves me scratching my head. Perhaps that's the point. I have a feeling "Outside The Noise" is going to get more and more listens throughout 2020, and I think undoubtedly it's one that I'll come to appreciate more and more with each listen. If, angular Heavy Psych is something that piques your interest, B.B.F's "Outside The Noise" should whet that appetite for sure.
