Autumn's Child - Autumn's Child album cover

I would like to preface this review by saying I had no intention of comparing these phenomenal musicians to anyone, living or dead, period. Their music and musical ability stands on its own merit and is some of the most melodic and virtuosic that I have heard in ages. Having said that, I have to say that if Freddie Mercury and Jon Bon Jovi had somehow managed to have a child, he would most assuredly be named Mikael Erlandsson. At the same time, I have to say that if John Norum (EUROPE, DON DOKKEN) and Brian May had done the same, his name would be Pontus Akesson. Yes, they are THAT good.

AUTUMN'S CHILD is a Swedish supergroup, consisting of members of LAST AUTUMN'S DREAM, MOON SAFARI, HEAT, ECLIPSE, and W.E.T. Their self-titled debut release, full of melodic and powerful music, was released in December of 2019. For fans of progressive metal and 80s hair metal, this release should not be missed.

The album opens with a short "Intro," leading into the rocker "Rubicon Sign." From its start, the song screams. From a fantastic guitar and keyboard intro, into Erlandsson's powerful vocal work, it is truly a harbinger for things to come. Akesson and Tee's shared solo is also of exceptional notice here, only leading me to want more. Following up, the song "Glory" is an exceptionally well-written piece, opening with shared keys and guitar, and also housing an incredible interlude of the same.

Where I first noted the influence of Brian May was in the song "Victory." The well-timed guitar fills, meshed with Erlandsson's vocals, centered on a stage performer truly connecting with an audience, screamed of QUEEN's influence. The lyric "We are the champions, spread your wings" only helps to fuel that comparison, so please forgive me for that one.

I also fully believe that the song "Breaking My Heart Again," another very well written piece, both lyrically and musically, could be an outright AOR hit. It certainly has the hook and the power to get the job done. Hopefully someone gives this band the support they so richly deserve; and puts them in front of audiences that will appreciate their ability as much as I do.

I can't help but think I'm "over-gushing" on this release a bit, but I truly have no control to stop it. In its genre, I haven't heard as solid a record in a very, very long time. If they would let me do "11's", I would.
