Arcas - Arcas album cover

The intention of ARCAS' music is to allow the listener to drift away, experience beautiful landscapes and embark on an emotional journey while listening. To that end the songwriting centers around the contrast of fast and heavy Black Metal parts on the one hand and soft and mellow clean parts on the other. The album contains five tracks.

"Ensilumi" leads off the album. It begins with soft tones, and some hushed thunder rumbling in the background. Clean guitars roll in like a person quietly strolling through the park without a care in the world. Black Metal vocals some in, but the sad, despondent music continues. The sound picks up just a bit after the half-way mark, then is reduced to solemn piano notes through the end. "Toivoton" is shorter and opens with charging guitars and drums, but also some really pretty keyboard/piano notes. The vocals are harrowing but the music remains accessible. Charming, delicate piano notes provide a brief interlude before a strong finish.

"Valituslaulu" begins with a more powerful and commanding sound, but those melodic elements are still very present in the music. The guitars build layers of harmony and melody that are both subtle and graceful. "Nostalgia" is of course an English word that we all know the meaning of...a longing for the past, or a reminder of past events that you look back upon fondly. Supple tones lead the song forward, with just enough atmosphere to allow the song to take effect. It begins to pick up with a distorted riff and some more layers, until the feeling is sufficiently satiated in your mind.

"Hiljainen" closes the album. Following a soft entrance, it begins to build with power. The skies grey and open up, letting the downpour commence. But through it, you can see the sun on the other side. The rain subsides, and you can see a beautiful rainbow begin to form. The rain commences again, but this time you don't care, because you have seen nature's beauty. Overall, this is exactly how I like my Black Metal. The darker side of the genre is represented in the Black Metal vocals, but the instruments push melodies and harmonies high into the sky, past the clouds, and above the mountain peaks. This album will indeed take the listener on an emotional journey, to wherever your heart desires.
