Anthea - Tales Untold album cover

ANTHEA are a Melodic, Symphonic Metal band from Los Angeles, CA. The band creates a unique theatrical sound blending Progressive, Power, and Thrash Metal elements, with a grand, cinematic edge. "Tales Untold" is their latest offering, and contains ten tracks. The title track is the first cut. It begins with a rich and grand composition thick with keys and Symphonic elements. As is common in this style, it borders on Power Metal. Diego had a very strong voice, and some harsh vocals are mixed in at times. "Ascendence" is a shorter song, but with no fewer grandiose elements. The harsh vocals bring a bit of an edge to the music, while the piano brings some of the melody.

"Song for Winter" begins with pretty piano notes and a lively, but melancholic sound. This track drips with emotion from a poignant, longing elements. "The Deceiver" is a darker song, as the title suggests, with an aggressive bottom end and some more "get-up-and-go" haste. This song goes straight for your throat. The chorus is rich and full and brings the melody in smooth tones. "Sapiens" opens with drums and some Middle Eastern elements. Keyboards whip into a frenzy and a bright and burning energy flows from Diego's fingers. This a very well-crafted song which says a lot in a tight amount of time. "Memoriam" begins with clean, and somber tones from acoustic guitars and light strings. Diego's voice is the highlight of this song.

"Looking Glass" is an energetic romp filled with melodies and a heavier sound. The bass guitar thumps away while keys and strong drumming fill in the empty spots. The album is gaining speed and direction. "Empyrean" begins with a more aggressive sound, from a thick riff and supporting keys. It darts in and out of the light along the way, keeping the listener on their toes. "Sunder Heart" opens with symphonic elements and harsh vocals. The song has a good deal of energy, and the keyboard solo following the bridge is absolutely fantastic. "In Time" closes the album, with a tender and pretty song showcasing the band's strong sense of melody, and what a hefty vocal performance! You cannot help to sing along with this chorus, trust me.

Although it's safe to say that this style has now been done thousands of times, I find ANTHEA's interpretation to be both fresh and personal. What they have accomplished on the album is a great sense of balance. Each instrument has a place and plays together in a synergy that is real. The musicians are also quite skilled. Any fans of Symphonic or Melodic Metal will find this album to their liking.
