Ankhara - Premonicion album cover

I'll admit, I don't think I listen to a lot of bands from Spain. Mostly Dark Moor, but even though these guys are described as power metal on Metal Archives, I would put them closer to speed or thrash/power metal. Another disclaimer, I am not a huge fan of either of these genres, but I will do my best to be fair when judging this album.

The production is a bit hollow which almost works for everything, except the vocals. I don't want to criticize the vocalist too much because there are moments when I like what he's doing, but I think the production isn't doing him any favors. The guitars sound pretty good and when they get to shred more than chug under the verse, there are some really good riffs here like on "Levantar Mi Alma", but the good only serve to highlight the biggest problem with this album. None of the melodies or hooks are particularly interesting. Like they're not bad they're just kind of generic and honestly I had a hard time sitting through this album and paying attention the whole time. Most of the music just kind of blends together in a miasma of boring vocal melodies and samey riffs. The bridges and the solos are easily the most interesting parts.

I think the issue lies more in the songwriting than anything else, there will be people who enjoy the vocals and like I said the riffs have some good moments, but the songs themselves are just boring. I'm sorry this is going to be a short review, but I just don't have much to talk about. Lentamente had a decent chorus and a fun solo, "Sin Suplicar" had some moments, "El Cazador" has a fun solo, but "Levanter Mi Alma" was definitely the song that stood out the most. Even with these highlights I don't think there's any song on here I'm going to be revisiting.

I've never listened to these guys before so I don't know how quality their previous works are, but I hope they're better than this. There are good elements here, but nothing to bring me back.
