Magic
Angelwarrior Ace
ANGELWARRIOR ACE is a one-man "Noble Precious Metal" band based out of Germany. Recently signed to 7Hard Records, this is their debut album and contains eleven tracks. The lead-in instrumental is entitled "Magic." There are a bevy of various sounds in this track, including animal and bird noises, thunder and soft drum strikes, as if you were in the jungle as it came alive around you. "Final Prophecy" is the first track with vocals. The riff is dirty and gritty, and the vocals vary from low end utterances to higher screaming, but always with a gravely edge. There are in fact quite unique in their delivery. Sonically the track is fairly thin and straightforward without surprises. "Odysseus" is a little more sinister and I am reminded of something KING DIAMOND might compose here. It is definitely dark and mysterious in nature.
"Balls of Steel" opens with some spoken words dedicated to his ex-band members and you can hear the message loud and clear. Still, the riffing remains trite and there just isn't a lot of meat to the song. The key/string section is nice but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared. "Sadness of the Beast" is the first song where we hear some variation. I really like the way it flows and the softness of the melody. The big cat growls remind us that it is still a wild animal, capable of a kill at any time. "Curse" opens with a clean vocal scream in the high range but quickly reverts to the low, growling style of vocals we have heard to date. The running double bass gives the track a little more welcomed thickness in the mid-section. "Thin Line" has an unusual way of connecting the key in the main riff and the key in the vocals. This results in a disconnect that is difficult to follow in my opinion. The guitar solo is noteworthy however.
"Immune" features a keyboard passage that too quickly leads to the main riff. The riff is low and heavy, as are the vocals, but it fails to make enough of a musical connection. A little more variation especially with the keys could have taken it much further. "Tornado" closes the album. There is a long lead in, as if you are witnessing the slow formation of a tornado, and the main riff is hasty and fueled by furious drumming. Overall the album is just flat for me. There is little diversity and virtually no texture here. Though it is a first effort and I would be interested in hearing more from the band in the future, I think you can pass on this one.
