Memories of a Wandering Soul
Amidst Dreams of Tomorrow
Hailing from three different countries, AMIDST DREAMS OF TOMORROW is an Atmospheric/Post-Black Metal band formed in 2020. From their Bandcamp page, "The feelings that hurt most, the emotions that sting most, are those that are absurd - the longing for impossible things, precisely because they are impossible; nostalgia for what never was; the desire for what could have been; regret over not being someone else; dissatisfaction with the world's existence." This is the debut full-length for the trio, and contains eight tracks.
"Unto the Darkess" opens the album. It's a short, atmospheric number with muted tones in the background. "Desolation" is the first proper track. An explosion of sorts leads to the opening sound, and I am first struck by the bad production. It's overly treble in nature. The music isn't bad, building layers of darkness. The main riff ushers in a clearer sound, but the song ends abruptly. "Crestfallen" is a much longer song, opening with melancholy piano notes. The music progresses slowly, with the addition of keys, guitars, and heavy drums. It then backs off to more atmospheric elements and lone piano notes. This pattern repeats.
"Journey Under the Moonlight" is another that begins with soft tones and piano notes. It begins to swell, with a delicate, pretty, and slow-moving pace. The tones that carry this song forward are quite charming. "Sorrow of the Humbled" is another song that begins with piano notes and strings. This song has some subdued melodies that if you listen carefully, are full of emotion-albeit sorrowful, but emotional nonetheless. But just as the song gains steam, it ends. "New Horizons" opens with a heavier sound at first, with a steady, melancholy cadence. It then picks up with a hastier pace and some lead guitar notes.
"Into the Light" is another alluring song with pretty piano notes and some real sense of regret, as the band discussed above. The song doesn't last very long however and these melodies don't really have the chance to develop. The title track closes the album. There is more sonority in this song, and the melancholy tones are high. As it begins to die, the sorrowful elements come back stronger, like a fading star on the horizon. The drums pick it back up, and it rides a heavier emotional wave to completion. This album was good, but could have been better. The emotional tugs were noteworthy, and you can feel them deeply. But if the band took a little more time to develop some of the delicate melodies, including some dynamics in the songs, the album could have been better. The production could also use some work. But as it was, it was enjoyable, and I could sense their aspirations.
