AEGRUS is back with their new EP "The Carnal Temples."  During the 16 years of its existence, the Finns have established their position as one of the high quality names of Black Metal hailing from the land of thousand lakes. "The Carnal Temples" EP contains four relentless tracks with killer riffs and stunning melodies while lyrics are dealing with pure Devil worship and occult topics.

The title track leads off the album. From the opening notes, you can tell this plate of chaos is FWOBM...the vocals, the rhythm guitars, the machine gun drumming, and the lack of discernable bass parts solidifies the tale. The lead guitars are a bit different, and the band plays with confidence however, so all is not a total loss. "The Death Rapture" opens with a slower groove that soon morphs into the typical FWOBM sound. It changes around the mid-way point with audible bass notes and some clean guitars, but they don't last long. The vile sound returns with a vengeance.

"Moonlit Coffinspirit" begins with a slower collection of lead guitar notes and some scratchy rhythm guitars. The vocals shrieks combine with a steadily hollow and depressing sound that mires in muck for much of the track. "Flesh and Blood" closes the album. It features a tight groove as well as some decent musicianship, but all of the cliché Black Metal elements are present. They move through various passages with some commanding presence but in the end, the final product is the same.

Though the band are considered early forefathers of the Black Metal sound, this EP really doesn't provide anything original or new to the genre. Purists will probably love it...citing its rich traditionalist approach, and as I mentioned, the band is not without their musical talent, but it's just another average Black Metal album for me.
