Resist

Admire the Grim

This was a promising debut album from the quintet from Finland. They prove that they have the chops and the songwriting skills to be a major player in the genre. For their next outing, I would just encourage them to explore more of the melodic side of their sound and take more chances in the area of experimentation. This would really put some miles between them and their peers.

I wasn’t able to find a lot of information about the band from the internet, but they are a Melodic Death Metal band from Finland. This is the band’s debut album, and it has nine songs. “Cresent Moon” is first, and like country mates CHILDREN OF BODOM, there is a good deal of melody intermixed with the aggression of Death Metal. The vocals have a snarly edge to them, and both the bass work and lead guitar work are excellent The title track has a catchy melody as well as some intricate guitar work, and this is just one area where the Fins outpace the rest of the world. “Rivers to Surge” also has some catchy melodies, and although the aggression remains strong, it’s the melody that really brings the song to life. So far, the band’s debut is a real cracker.

“Acoustic Melodies from the Past and Present” is a sweet little interlude that highlight’s the band’s sense of songwriting. It has smooth, gentle tones, and it is a nice diversion from the harder side of the album. “Choke on your Words” has a faster and more energetic pace as the aggression is dialed up. The melody takes a back seat in this song, and sometimes you just need a burner to keep your blood flowing. “Hypocrite” has a nice balance between catchy, melodic elements and straight up contentious sounds, and the clean vocal whispers bring another sound to the table. “Mad Queen of the Second Sun” is another song that smartly uses melodies in just the right places. This is often one area where Melodic Death Metal bands fail but not ADMIRE THE GRIM. The shouted vocal echoes are also a nice touch.

“No Limits’ closes the album, and it’s a heavy, weighted song that focuses more on the aggressive side of the band. Overall, this was a promising debut album from the quintet from Finland. They prove that they have the chops and the songwriting skills to be a major player in the genre. For their next outing, I would just encourage them to explore more of the melodic side of their sound and take more chances in the area of experimentation. This would really put some miles between them and their peers.
