It was about seven o'clock in the afternoon when I met up with a friend of mine outside of An Club. The gig was to begin in about a half an hour later and we started talking with other guys who had come there earlier. The few people that had gathered outside An Club were very enthusiastic with the fact that we were about to see The Lord Weird Slough Feg perform live. This gig was one of the many underground gigs that are about to take place this year. It is finally a certainty that many underground gigs take place in our country (Greece) in contrary with the past years where we only got the chance to see and underground band play live once every five years.
There was a slight delay with the beginning of the gig; about 45 minutes, but this problem did not bother any of the fans that were waiting outside An Club. The doors opened at eight o'clock and 15 minutes later Crystal Winds went on stage and began to play their Epic Heavy Metal. They had an American sound, influenced a little by Manowar but they still need work in order to achieve a satisfying level. Their sound is very rough and the vocals need a lot of work.
Even though they did not manage to make the people bang their heads, except for some guys that enjoyed their music quite a lot, they received a big applause and 30 minutes later they ended their show with a cover version of Judas Priest's "Electric Eye", an average cover song if you ask me. They were not too bad, but they need a lot of work done in order to get better and to be able sign with any record company.
15 minutes after Crystal Winds ended their show Ironsword appeared on stage and the people started hailing them. The Portuguese Epic Metallers were very well prepared and had no problems at all. Some fans made some fun with Tann, the guitarist and vocalist of Ironsword, about the Euro 2004 Championship which Greece won at Portugal and the band and people laughed a lot. Ironsword did manage to warm up the people with songs like "King Of All Lings", Die By The Sword" and "Into The Arena". Their music is influenced a lot by Omen and a little by Manilla Road and gave the people a good reason for a good headbang. They played two songs, "Trespassers" and "The Wench", from their forthcoming album "Return Of The Warrior" and 45 minutes after their first appearance on stage their show came to an end. Tann said a couple of times during their songs that he is Mark Shelton junior… as a joke and he made fun with them. The response of the people was very good and I think that there were not many people that did not enjoy their show. A very good band with very good songs. I hope that we will see them again in the future.
At ten o'clock, 15 minutes after the end of Ironsword's show, finally the time had come for the headliners of this gig. The Lord Weird Slough Feg appeared on stage and all the people were shouting out loud the band's name. The crowd welcomed them with enthusiasm and hailed them when they started playing. The few people that had come to An Club (about 150) that night created a great atmosphere by singing their songs along with the band and were yelling all the time. Mike Scalzi, the vocalist and guitarist of the San Francisco band, appeared on the stage having painted his body in a way that made him look like a Gael warlord. Slough Feg is one of the best underground Heavy Metal bands and their technical American Heavy_Power Metal pleased everyone who had come to see them that night. The crowd made An Club seem to be about to collapse at songs like "Highway Corsair", "Heavy Metal Monk", "Death Machine", "High Passage_Low Passage", "Asteroid Belts" and "Baltech's Lament". They also played a few new songs and after an encore where they played a cover version of Thin Lizzy's "Black Rose" they left the stage at half past eleven. The one and a half hours that they played seemed so little but no one left that night disappointed. Everyone was very happy after the end of the gig and the fact that the members of Slough Feg and Ironsword gave autographs to anyone who asked them to was simply great.
In conclusion I have to say that we saw a very good gig and that there are surely more to come. At this point I would like to thank my friend, Kostas, for helping me with this report. It is really good that many underground bands have come to our country during the last two years and it very good that many more will come in the future simply because of some guys who are fans of Heavy Metal and organize gigs for the fans and for themselves and not just for the money.
