I've been waiting over a decade to see Six Feet Under and Chris Barnes. Finally, I got the chance to see them and it was SO worth the wait. Actually, I wish I could have seen them more. Six Feet Under has been one of my favorite Death Metal bands for years. And I've been a fan of Chris Barnes since his days with Cannibal Corpse. I got the chance to interview with Chris back in March (click here to read the interview), when he told me about this upcoming tour. I've been planning on this show ever since.
There were about 200 kids there, the place was packed. It was at this cool little venue in Nashville called The Exit In. Before Six Feet Under took the stage, the crowd started to get a little excited and impatient. They all started chanting "Six Feet Under". Of course, when they guys started to take the stage, the crowd got a bit crazier. Chris hadn't taken the stage yet. The rest of the band started the show with my favorite song off their new album "13", "Decomposition Of The Human Race". Right before it was time for the vocals to start, Chris came out and the crowd went ballistic. I was definitely glad to be behind the barricades.
Even though this was the first show for this tour, they played the entire show as if they've been on tour for months. With Greg Hall relentlessly and effortlessly rolling his drums, Terry Butler providing the chest exploding bass lines, Steve Swanson's shredding mach 90 guitars, and Chris Barnes' growling voice from the depths of hell, I don't' think the fans could have asked for a better show. Not to mention the diversity of their setlist. They really didn't play much from the new album, "13". Basically, only the first 3 songs were from "13". Surprisingly, the rest of their set was songs from almost all of their older albums. That was extremely cool being that I've never been able to see them perform live. So being able to hear the stuff I've been listening to for years live, finally, was incredible. I was very pleased when they closed with "Beneath A Black Sky". That song just brutally slams.
Even though most of the songs they played were older songs, and this was the first show for the tour, they still played flawlessly. I was impressed with the overall show. They have such an intense stage presence that gets the crowd so into it, it's almost lethal. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them again. And after playing the show, even though they were tired, sweaty, and ready to relax, Greg, Terry, and Steve still took time out to talk to the waiting fans, sign autographs, take pictures, and hang out for a bit. Chris, unfortunately, wasn't feeling too good after the show, but he still signed autographs the other guys from the band brought to him from fans. They were super cool guys and show a lot of respect to their fans for the support they give.
Here is the set list they played:
