Dark At Dawn

Reunited German power metallers DARK AT DAWN have released their first material since 2006 "Noneternal" as an independent release. As such things occur our appetite for information grows. Thus we have summoned Michael Lowin of DARK AT DAWN for an interview with MettleAngel here in Metal Temple to discuss about the past, present and future of the band their new EP and covers!

Michael Lowin (Dark At Dawn) interview
Hi there Michael, how have you been? It's great to have you for this interview for Metal Temple.

Hey mate, I'm fantastic, thank you - and it's a pleasure doing this interview for you!

I see that the (EP) is self released. Are you working on a full-length for 2013? Have you been offered any record contracts, or will you just go ahead and self release it?

Well, there are some label contacts - but no contract is signed yet. And to be honest: a deal isn't the most important thing for us at present. We just finished our support tour with W.A.S.P. and now keeping up work on the songs for our next full-length CD which will be released in 2013 - with or without a record label.

What inspired this reunion as I understand you disbanded because the band members had other jobs that were more demanding and other concerns in their lives? Did you come to realize that there was a strong fan base that was hungry for more?

There were multiple reasons for our split-up in 2007 - and you're right, one was the "job – band – life – balance - problem" we had at that time. A lot of things have happened in the meantime and I guess today it's easier for us to cope with those sorts of things. And while discussing a reunion we decided together that each one of us will take the time needed to bring the band back to life - and keep it alive. The initial spark for the reunion was actually set during a birthday-surprise-gig for a friend of us, where four of the band (Buddy, Sauer, Schröder, me) and a bunch of mates did some metal-classics. And that rockin' & rollin' just brought back the magic to us! At that stage we didn't know if there was still a fan base after we've been away for this long time (well, a long time in music business terms...). But now we are really, really stunned and blown away by all the great reactions of old and new fans - giving us a warm welcome back. Awesome!

On the new EP "Noneternal" it sounds to me like a blend of the self-titled and perhaps your second or third album. Since I did not have lyrics, perhaps you could explain the theme behind "Firedrunk" and "Arabian Fights"?

We usually don't like to explain our lyrics because we like people finding their own story behind our songs. But as a brief overview: "Firedrunk" is about an arsonist and "Arabian Fights" is dealing with the revolutions going on in the Arab world.

Speaking of "Arabian Fights", a clever play on words by the way, I noticed the Middle-Eastern tone to the music. This balances well with the opening track "Coming Home", which has an almost Celtic flavour to it. Is the EP perhaps conceptual, dealing with the current war in the East?

As mentioned before, "Arabian Fights" is inspired by the current situation in the Middle East - and so is the artwork and the title of the EP itself. But "Noneternal" is not  conceptual - each track tells its own story in music and lyrics. But it's interesting that "Coming Home" comes with a Celtic flavour to you - because for us it has a strong "country & western(ish)" tone...

What are some of the songs, themes, ideas, you have for the new album?

Oh, there's still a long way to go - so it's a bit early to talk about that at this stage... The songs we have already put together (in music) are all quite different – now working again as a whole band brings a lot of new ideas and influences. But be sure: it'll be 100% Dark At Dawn – and a truly awesome album! 😉

Just out of curiosity what is your favourite of all the DARK AT DAWN albums? You have played on all the studio releases, correct? I am partial to "Baneful Skies" as it is the first release of yours I ever heard, also I love the cover of "Don't Pay The Ferryman" by Chris DeBurg.

Right, I'm one of the original members and played on all studio releases. I guess for me it's also "Baneful Skies". I really like the "mood" of the songs and the title track is a killer on stage! We truly enjoyed that one playing on our Noneternal-Tour! On top of that it was really emotional and intensive to get this record done - a debut album is always quite special, I reckon. And yeah – the "Ferryman" still rocks like hell! 🙂

What inspired you to cover that particular song anyway?

Most of us (including me) really like DeBurgh (hey, not the new stuff or the "Lady in red"-kitsch - but the old albums!) and the "Ferryman" is just a fantastic song! I mean it's great as a pop-song - but it's just awesome as a metal-song! The riff of the chorus is truly made for metal - and there are even metal-themed lyrics! In fact: it's a metal-song trapped in a pop-body. So we needed to free it! 🙂 By the way, a local radio station arranged an aftershow - meeting with Chris in 2002 and he actually already knew our version and sang along to our song! Pretty cool, eh? 😉
(Here you'll find an article about our meeting - only in German but with a funny photo:

Has the band done any other covers? The only other one for which I am familiar is the brilliant rendition of "Deliver Us From Evil" by Warlord.

Yes, on our second album "Crimson Frost" we did Gary Moore's "Out In The Fields". You have to check that one out!

Do you think the Metal Milieu is now ready to re-experience DARK AT DAWN given the 30 year success of GRAVEDIGGER and the overnight success of SABBATON; especially, given that Buddy's vocals albeit a bit rough still fit the music quite well?

Well, I hope so of course! But it's really hard to predict for me - the fans out there will decide! So we'll do our best putting together a great "comeback-album" for a reloaded DARK AT DAWN -experience and we hope that there are a lot of metal people out there who are in the mood for our kind of metal!

Michael I can't thank you enough for the interview. I wish you guys the best of luck. Keep those releases coming J

No worries mate - thank you very much for your interest!
