Max Kolesne

Krisiun

One of Brazil's most long-standing Metal stalwarts, KRISIUN, comprised of 3 brothers, are set to soon release their 9th studio album, "Forged By Fury", slated for August 7th. Also gearing up for an extensive European tour in support, drummer Max Kolesne had a lot to say when Jean-François Briard spoke with him about the themes of the new album, how internet downloading can come with benefits even for older bands, and what it was like growing up together, both as brothers and as a band.

How would you describe in your own words the sound of your newest album "Forged in Fury"?

Raw, brutal, savage and furious

What is your preferred brand of gear for the analog sound you are using presently?

Don't really have preferred brands… As long as I have a nice drum kit, good mics and a good recording sistem I'll be ok with that. The good system is to capture the musician's best moment… If you wanna sound consistent, solid and natural, you gonna have to make sure you will play good and hit hard the mother fucking drums.

Can you tell us a bit about the lyrical content in the album?

There are subjects about death, war, religion and all the conspiracies, conflicts and hypocrisy behind dogmas inflicted upon humans…  And also the usual message of staying strong and true to the things you believe in, fighting for it and never straying away from your path, no matter how hard it can be. Nothing complex or intricate about the lyrics, just the visions we have about this fucked up world we live in.

Which approach do you think you're going to take for your next offering, will it be different from this one?

It's hard to say, we don't plan things like that, we just follow our feelings and play music from the soul… It's something natural for us…if you think too much about the music you are composing you might lose the vibe..

On your album, Southern Storm, you included a cover of Sepultura's 'Refuse/Resist'. Why choose this particular song and what connection do you have with it? Is Sepultura one of your main inspiration?

Without a doubt Sepultura was one of our main influences, especially during the "Beneath the Remains" and "Arise" eras… we thought "Refuse Resist" would be a good way to pay tribute to this legendary band, the song is heavy as fuck, full of anger and attitude.

What bands did you enjoy touring with the most so far?

Oh it's hard to name just a few man… So many killer bands, and many friends we made on the road…
Immolation, Destruction, Obituary, Nile, Morbid Angel, Kataklysm, Hate Eternal, Arsis, Grave, and more…

What are your craziest moments on the road and in shows.

To me it's always the stage man, the feeling right before you hit the stage, the cult, concentration, focus and then the explosion of energy when the shows starts… It's hard to put in words…

It's well known that all three of you are brothers; what was it like growing up together? Did you all share similar tastes in music and metal?

We had a great childhood man, we have always been very united and got eachothers back… when I was in trouble in fights and such, Alex and Moyses would always be there to defend me no matter what… I was very lucky to have my older brothers to inspire me and teach me stuff….I grew up listening metal because of them… I was the little brother always around when they were listening to the first metal lps they got… Like Judas Priest, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Alayer, Metallica etc. So we pretty much grew up listening to the same bands and we kind of share the same taste when comes to Metal.

Some of your very first inspirations are said to be thrash acts such as Kreator and Sodom; later on, you opted for a Death metal style instead, for your debut album; will you ever experiment with thrash again (like you did with your Sepultura cover) or is Death your preferred approach?

We always had influences from old school metal, and we still have them. We just added new elements and influences when we got to know Altars of Madness for example… But our background has always been old school metal like Motorhead, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Venom , Destruction …I really don't give much thought about what is thrash or death nowadays, if it's brutal, mean and badass is good.

Brazil is normally known for Power metal, Progressive Metal and also Thrash Metal. But we never really hear often about the other extreme Brazilian metal bands; what could you recommend to us?

Honestly I thought that Brazil was most well known by its more brutal bands like Sarcofago, Krisiun, Vulcano, Korzus, Torture Squad, and many others…

How is the Brazilian metal scene; based on your personal experience touring, how would you compare it to others in the world?

Brazil is amazing man, people here love metal, shows are usually packed, and people are crazy. Shows we do here are usually good.

Are you for, against or neutral toward internet downloading? Do you think it can be better for promotion?

It was definitely bad on albums sales for all bands and labels… Internet is part of people's lives nowadays, everybody uses it for work and entertainment all the time, and most of these people only listen music on the Internet… So you definitely gotta have your music on the Internet for download so you can reach all the these people… On the other hand the real fans will always buy your records no matter what. Also I have seen more and more people buying vinyls nowadays… Internet downloading was really bad in the beginning but I guess we can use that in our favor, as a tool to promote our music and reach more people.

That's all the questions I got, thank you very much again for your time, have a great day!

Hey Jean, it was a pleasure!

Merci beaucoup!

See us in Canada! Take care!
