Stormy Night - Ball Of Thunder album cover

This is another band off the rare offer of Belgium in the worldwide Metal scene. STORMY NIGHT bear a smart name, a convincing cover artwork and some notable track titles, provided you like your Metal being 'heavy and nothing more'. The quartet had so far delivered only one demo recording, 2002's Act Of Revenge. Bearing in mind the herein reviewed release was issued in 2006, there apparently seems to be a long time of recording absence.
This does not, of course, mean STORMY NIGHT does not fill in the gap with some interesting playing. The tracklist sees a concept of 'classic' Metal songs, standing one foot to the British standards (IRON MAIDEN, SAXON, JUDAS PRIEST, (late) ANGELWITCH) with the other one 'flirting' with the US Metal legacy (HELSTAR, early SAVATAGE and just-heavy MANOWAR). Letawe's vocals are dusty and old-school, avoiding singing in higher octaves. The guitars are simple but ample, while the rhythm section is apparent yet fat; in - mostly - familiar - tempos, it's nothing groundbreaking yet nothing ugly or boring.
Ball Of Thunder is classic Heavy Metal in a raw production. The '80s Power Metal' term will also apply to this band. There's an epic touch, but nothing compared to the e.g. MANILLA ROAD or OMEN likes. If you have decided the 80s was the golden era of Metal, then try it in no fear.
