We're now halfway through BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR but it doesn't mean the festival has gotten tired yet. Tonight the festival is being headlined by rockers MASTODON who are newcomers to the festival and sub-headlined by GOJIRA who have die hard fans running around with inflatable whales. Today is a day to soak in the sunshine and appreciate the heavy music we get.

ROTTING CHRIST – RONNIE JAMES DIO STAGE

After a spectacular performance back in 2013 on the Sophie Lancaster stage, ROTTING CHRIST were welcomed back with open arms as they graced the crowd with ferocity. Performing a killer setlist to the crowd with songs such as ''Ze Nigmar'' and ''Elthe Kyrie'' from their newest album ''Rituals'' which certainly impressed old fans and new but the real hit with the audience was tracks like ''In Yumen-Xibalba''. ROTTING CHRIST definitely deserve a higher slot on the main stage or another headline slot on the S.O.P.H.I.E stage because this band know how to get the festival headbanging to every single song.

PARADISE LOST – RONNIE JAMES DIO STAGE

Anything dark and gothic doesn't normally work in the boiling hot sunshine but West Yorkshire pioneers PARADISE LOST get the huge crowd riled up to hear their music. Opening their set with ''No Hope In Sight'', you can barely hear the band due to how loud the crowd are singing along. Vocalist Nick Holmes is putting raw power into the vocals with all his might especially in various songs spanning their career. PARADISE LOST were one of the most anticipated acts of the weekend and it's easy to see why with their low tones and catchy riffs.

GOJIRA – RONNIE JAMES DIO STAGE

The only word to describe GOJIRA's sub headline set at Bloodstock is ''wow''. GOJIRA pulled a near perfect set, the only problem was that it wasn't long enough and should have headlined the festival with how much they impressed old & new fans. Playing a setlist mixed of tracks from new album ''Magma'' and older albums, the crowd was going wild with pits and headbanging with the odd flying inflatable whale appearing at times too. The French group were just mindblowing for everyone at the festival, proving how much a collection of great albums can affect people and bring them together.

MASTODON – RONNIE JAMES DIO STAGE
An unexpected headliner but still loved, MASTODON headline the Ronnie James Dio stage with ferocity and psychedelia. Opening the set with ''Tread Lightly'' which has the crowd bouncing on their toes followed by classics such as ''Oblivion'' and ''The Motherload'' but closing on ''Blood and Thunder''.

Guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher prove why they are lords of the riff whilst waltzing around the stage. Troy Sanders is one of the most eccentric bassists to watch but he knows how to bring a band to life; despite Brann Dailor being behind a huge drum set he still provides great vocals. Overall, MASTODON, despite being doubted still put on one hell of a show full of riffs, trippy lighting and catchy yet heavy music.
