Juliya Lerner (Spiteful) interview

Hello Juliya, thanks for being here today. Could you please introduce yourself and your band to those who may have never heard of Spiteful?

Hey! Spiteful for those who don't know it, is a Gothic metal band from Israel, influenced by bands like Epica, Lacuna Coil, and Evanescence. We are 6 members in Spiteful, I'm the vocalist, Slava & Danny playing the guitars, Meir on the bass, Yuval creates the atmosphere on the keyboards, and Ozzy playing the drums.

How do you guys define your music and your genre?

We try to give each song its own single touch. Usually we try to give a dark atmosphere and still kicking and rhythmic. We are not trying to define the style of ourselves, but those who seek to define, we believe that the gothic metal or Power metal would be the answer.

Indeed, it sounds more like Power Metal to me. I've listened to the 2 singles you have released, and both showed a great degree of versatility in your vocals. Who are your main influences as a singer?

First of all, thank you very much for the compliments! Usually I really enjoy digging and learning more and more about my genre soloists. But of course there are some soloists that I really admire and try to advance and improve to reach their abilities. I really like the vocal style of Simone Simons from Epica, as much as I like Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil and Floor Jansen from Revamp. And another one that I really admire for all of her abilities is Alisa White-Gluz from The Agonist.

It's really obvious that you are inspired by Alissa and Simone Simons. It is mentioned in the official Spiteful Facebook page that the new album is in process, can you tell us more about it?

In fact, the album is ready, and includes two instrumental tracks, two ballads, one heavier and one surprise; a cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Besides, another kicking seven songs one by one! Total album contains 12 tracks, and we tried to give it all our range of capabilities. In addition, the album has four guests from other bands, Yuval Or from White Rabbit band, that you've heard in one of the singles that we released, Yaniv Aboudy from Prey For Nothing, Alexei Raymar from Desert and Joe Amore from the French power metal band Nigthmare.

Sounds promising! So when do you plan to release it?

We are currently still working on the cover design, and still searching for a Label, as soon as we find one, we will be very glad to release the album.

I hope you will find a label soon. Do you contribute to the song writing process?

Thank you! Yes, most of the lyrics on the album are written by me. For the last couple of years, whenever I go through an experience that teaches me something, I get inspiration, and write a song. Besides me, Meir (bass player), also adds from his head and write a song or piece, which we build song around it together.

So you are the main lyric writer in the band? Is Spiteful your first band, or did you have previous experiences with other bands?

Yes, Spiteful is my first band. I hope and believe it is the last too

Do you have anything to say to the metal-temple audience?

Sure! Wherever you are and you read this interview, we would be very glad if you listen to our material, and we promise to give you more news and updates, and we hope to see you all at our concerts in the future!

Thanks again, Juliya!

Thank you! Cheers!
