Towers of Gold
Sacred Outcry
The Greek Metal scene isn't made only of extreme Metal acts, what's becoming clear on these days where digital platforms on internet help the fans to discover new bands. Today, even melodic genres of Metal have relevant names on Greek, acts with talent and potential to defy the giants and become one of them in a new Titanomachy for the best for Metal. One of them is the quartet SACRED OUTCRY, as can be heard on "Towers of Gold", their second album. Their music is a form of classic European Power Metal, with care for the technical approach, with heavy weighty parts, charming melodies and tons of a catching energy, and the blends elements of the 80s and 90s together (the weight of 80s acts of the genre and of the NWOBHM with the 90's acts care for refined instrumental arrangements).
One can say that their melodic work is tempered with epic features and some dark elements, and here presented on a full conceptual album. Yes, it's a very good release, but as one could say that the older genre gained a new outfit in the band's genre, a renewed energy that's hard to resist. In few words: it's a goddamn fucking great album to hear and enjoy! George Apalodimas (the band's founder and bassist) produced the album (as did cover art, Layout and helped on the orchestral arrangements), having at his side Steve Lado (the band's brand new guitar player) on the mixing and mastering, and the efforts were done to use an updated form of Power Metal recordings: clean, defined, using very good instrumental tunes, but always heavy and with an aggressive touch. And the band has some special guests on "Towers of Gold": Jeff Black playing 12-string guitars on "Symphony of the Night (The Curse of the Blind)" and "Where Crimson Shadows Dwell (And Ouroboros Dreamt)", Yorgos Karagiannis on the acoustic guitars on "Through Lands Forgotten (At the Crossroads of Fate)", "Symphony of the Night (The Curse of the Blind)", and "A Midnight Reverie (Whispers in the Wind)", and Sapfo Lignou on the orchestral arrangements.
The entire line-up of the band is new (except for George), so it's the reason for the fresh sensation that the album bears. And it's entirely excellent experience for the ears, but as a referential frame for the first time on "Towers of Gold", one can check "The Flame Rekindled (Lurid Lights and Drunken Revelry)" (an aggressive Power Metal song with charming orchestral arrangements contrasting with German Metal guitar riffs and solos), "The Voyage (Towards Immortality)" (a grandiose song filled with orchestral choirs, and the rhythm that evades extremely slow or fast tempos shows the fine interpretation of the vocals), "Into the Storm (Beyond The Lost Horizon)" (an Epic Power Metal filled with excellent melodies and arrangements, and a very good technical rhythmic support of bass guitar and drums), "Symphony of the Night (The Curse of the Blind)" (an extremely beautiful set of melodies is shown on this one, and what lovely epic an introspective ambience), "The Sweet Wine of Betrayal (The Perennial Sin)" (pay attention to its ample set of arrangements and melodies), and "Towers of Gold (Tempus Edax Rerum)" (a giant song that lasts more than 14 minutes, but full of variations and orchestral arrangements that seems to last few seconds), and if these ones are enough, check the entire album, for it works better as an unity.
"Towers of Gold" is really a mature and great release, and SACRED OUTCRY is the next album Power Metal fans will fall in love with for sure!
