Pathogen
Flidais
What do names as BLUE CHEER, THE CREAM, RUSH, MOTÖRHEAD, THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE, DORSAL ATLÂNTICA, EXCITER, VENOM, KAMALA and some others have in common? Simple: they're trios, one of the more popular and used forms of band in Rock music. Even today, the form of trios attracts many musicians. It's a tradition into Rock 'n' Roll genres, and even today is widely used. So it's not hard to understand the reasons for the Canadian act FLIDAIS is a trio. And even an experienced band (they're on the road since 2011), they're releasing their first album now, "Pathogen". The trio uses a form of music that is a blend between Heavy Metal with Progressive Rock influences, sometimes reminding that QUEENSRŸCHE did on the past (but with some aggressive and fast parts, as can be heard in some moments of "Outbreak"), and they evade songs with long timespans (only "Reprisal" is longer than 10 minutes) .
Of course, this formula isn't so new, but in the hands of the trio the old ways gain a new energy, a young and savage appeal. And of course that the trio needs to mature a bit more in the future, but for now, their musical work is really very good, and the fun is guaranteed for all those who try it. Michael Marucci worked on the production, the sound engineering (on this part, he had the helping hand of Eric Altomonte) and mixing, leaving the mastering to Peter Letros. For a first (and independent) album, it's good, because everything is heavy and can be understood without greater complains, but it could be better, because the final result sounds 'artificial' sometimes.
The band shows potential with "Pathogen", and their music shows many good moments, as can be heard on songs as "Obsession" (a song with resemblances with 70's Hard Rock, with some psychedelic elements, but with very good melodies and guitars' arrangements), "Outbreak" (that brings their music into the 80's, with traces not only of Progressive Metal, but of Hard Rock and Glam Metal as well, with good technical work of bass guitar and drums), "Darkness" (a deeper and introspective ballad, but it's dark and not sweet as some can think, with good vocals), "Infection" (this one brings things into some modern Prog Metal acts, with very good technical work, but with catchy melodies as well), "Calamity" (that bears some aggressive hooks inherited from Thrash Metal), and the long "Reprisal", a song filled with many contrasts and changes, with many melodic hooks as well.
"Pathogen" shows a band with potential for the future, but it shows as well that FLIDAIS is a name to be followed carefully. And by the way: the band now is a quartet, because Jake Butcher joined their ranks on guitars.
