Skare
From Bandcamp, "by command of The Hermetic Order, we present this new debut SKARE album, a new entity of THOOY...an album compiling tales from winters past, from reverential expression of an Ibex in his mountain home to mournful hymns of familial funerals in the frozen forest. Mourn we may, but beyond the church spires lies a frozen kingdom where nature cares not, for dying is but a single step across the threshold into death. Skare is formed when the top layer of snow melts and refreezes, creating a crust which allows predators to walk unhindered in deep snow and allows humans to ski silently in the deepest forest." The album contains five songs.
"The Lonesome Ibex" is the first. Out of the gate, it sounds like a lot of Black Metal, with rolling drums, thick guitars, and vocal screams. The one main difference is that you can hear a discernable riff, along with some backing symphonic elements. "A Sordid Ceremony" means "involving ignoble actions and motives; arousing moral distaste and contempt." A perfect title for the genre. The song leaves a little to be desired...it sort of sounds like the band is just going through the motions. "Beyond the Church Spires" is a ten-minute opus, beginning with clean guitars and a somber feeling. A deep and slow riff comes in from there. The vocals are horrid guttural utterances. It picks up with a hasty rhythm and some nice backing symphonic elements.
"The Threshold into Death" is a fast-moving sound with a little explorative guitar work. The album has a horrid and harrowing sound, but it just doesn't sound much different than thousands of other bands out there in the genre. "Into Icy Pewter Sky" closes the album, with a similar sound. The album stands out in a few ways...the guitar work isn't always that "wall of sound" you come to hear, the bass notes are audible, and light symphonic elements occupy the background. But the pacing and the vocals are very similar to every other Black Metal band out there. For these reasons, it was just a mediocre listen, and nothing more. They have the talent to do much better.
