SPECTRUM MORTIS is a death/doom metal band from Spain who formed in 2015.  "Bit Meseri - The Incantation," is their full length debut but they also have two EP's and a split under their blasphemous belt as well. The appeal of "Bit Meseri," relies in the insane guitar tone—raw yet refined enough to make a lasting impact.  On top of that, the riffs are unadulterated hell on earth with such a fantastic sound to them. The band, while definitely doom, isn't afraid to throw in faster parts in between the rumbling groove of the slower aspects—definitely gives the album an old school, occult feel to it. The vocals are well done, going on along just fine for this style.  They are caught somewhere between a blackened scream and a death metal mid range high.  The vocals add another layer to an already deeply underground sound but don't overdo it and take all the attention.

The first track, "An," and last one, "Shamash," don't do much for me.  They are definitely too short and I could see them being great were they fleshed out to be more than short instrumentals.  But the six tracks in between?  Worth the ride. "Utu-Abzu," makes use of what the rest album continues to do well in: using clean tones, that are dark in their own right, to set up the heavier aspects of the songs.  Setting this tone early on in the song, allows the rest of to flesh out naturally. Slow and even atmospheric in its own tragic way in the beginning, the song descends into much faster and tighter rhythms later on. The groove is almost blackened in a way but the vibe is straight up death metal. The guitar melodies (or what can be considered melodic for this band), fit into the structure f the songs well enough without being over used but still memorable after their parts are done.

The title track opens with such soundscapes, this time, somehow, even more dim.  The drums and bass provide a low rumble for the vocals and guitar to ride upon, each instrument handling changes in tempo to effectively steer the song where it needs to.  Again, this is smooth and free flowing song writing that knows exactly where it wants to go and how to get there. "An-Enlilda," opens with a riff that is one part death metal and another pure groove.  But they don't use the groove to provide just catchy moments-the band uses it to carry their brand of death to the next part. Near the middle portion of the song, melodic elements inject themselves into the song at just the right moment—adding to the song but still allowing room for the more extreme aspects to take the reigns.

"El Sol de Eridu," is the last proper track—and it is a banger.  The vocals are especially frenzied but that double bass threatens the song to crumble but the bass more than makes up for it, bolstering a new foundation. Speaking of bass, it gets surprisingly melodic at the 3:46 mark but it doesn't last long as the final moments of the songs are a giant rumble strip of double bass.  The final moments of the song are the riffs becoming a little more melodic but also part of this gigantic doom tsunami. All in all, SPECTRUM MORTISS' "Bit Meseri - The Incantation"  is a solid slab of death doom that hits all the sweet spots of the genre.
