Swedish Doom Metal outfit SORCERER first formed in 1988, and, after a split in 1992, began recording new music in 2010. "Reverence", the latest ep to be ushered into the bands discography, four covers of classic rock and metal tracks, in SORCERER's style, meaning it's a powerful Doom feast of studious riffs, striking drums, blazing solos and imposing vocals, with Reverence, the band pay tributes to the guys that paved the way in an epic fashion.
Opening with a cover of "Gates of Babylon" by the mighty classic Metal band RAINBOW, SORCERER make it clear the deep running roots that flow through their own music. Trimming out the synthy ambient opening of the original, the new edition opens like a striking match, erupting into a deliberated riff and very hard hitting, punchy drums, the slower pace allowing for full force to be put behind the hits. The subtle, noodling high pitched guitar work comes and leaves too soon, it perfectly blends into the great mix, that finely balances all the elements into a cohesive and powerful sound. Anders's vocals perfectly fit the crossover of Doom and classic Metal, he serves both camps equally well with his emphatic, booming voice. They have kept the choruses of operatic voices that simmer just above the background from the original, arguably the best part of the song, and here it serves a big role in creating a huge grandiose vibe, especially when placed in tandem with the guitar solos. The patient, slower Doom approach to this track certainly elevates the already grand song, and with the mix adding layers to the elements makes for an epic redux.
Next up is SAXON's 1984 track "Crusader." Like with "Gates of Babylon," SORCERER take a steadier, more meditative approach, resulting in a grander, exciting cover. Whereas the original track followed a more classical opening structure - muted guitars then drums then not muted guitars, the opening here is a captivating, angelic vocal solo that you'd hear in Lord of the Rings with a soft glowing hue filter over the screen. Stepping it up even further, the instruments are ushered in by a staggering 80s inspired Tom fill, its one extreme to the other, tranquil dreamy vocals to cocaine-fuelled reverb. What follows is a Doom tinged, slower, harder hitting "Crusader" that gracefully leaps from beautiful calm to commanding power.
Tracks two and four are BLACK SABBATH and OZZY OSBOURNE solo work respectively, and both are treated with the reverence (like the title suggests) that they deserve.
SORCERER pay wonderful tribute to the legends of British Metal with "Reverence" and the four excellent covers need not to justify their existence with their great atmosphere, production, arrangement and the great addition of their hard hitting brand of Doom Metal.
