Taste It
Sainted Sinners
Today, there are many bands trying to make old musical genres live again, some failing miserably on the task (becoming just a carbon copy of bands of the past), but some with promising works that are really very good. It's a matter of trusting in yourself to make things on your own, and throwing all idolatry for others in the garbage can. And one very good work that deserves to be praised is from the German quintet SAINTED SINNERS, as can be heard on "Taste It".
The musical work of the band is based on a dry and straight form of Hard Rock based on names as LED ZEPPELIN, LYNYRD SKYNYRD, DEEP PURPLE and others, when labels didn't matter as today. But they know how to make things great with their music, working on a personal way filled with melodic hooks and nasty to the bones. The formula is old, but they use a personal approach on it that fills their music with energy, and it's what matters in the end of all. The production's focus was to be organic and simple, and maybe's the reason for the band to take the production in their own hands (having Dick Dropkick on the mixing and Harry Hess on the mastering). It's a good work, but it could be better, because some modern definition would make the songs even better (and this isn't a mention for the use of digital editions, you known).
The energy shown by the band is really amazing, and its music is spontaneous as well. And to have a clear idea of what they're up to, take a bit on "Against the Odds" (a massive energy, as a Heavy metal song played in the 70's, with great guitars and keyboards), "One Today" (a massive and strong Hard Rock song with those bluesy influences and increases the weight of bass guitar and drums), "The Essence of R'n R" (a fine combination of melodies with a hard weight and some groove), "Never Back Down" (these organic hooks are hard to resist), "Good Ol' Company" (a charming Hard Rock, based on simple melodies and with excellent 'plantian' vocals), "On and On (Chained)" (what a lovely chorus), and on the frantic and noisy Rock 'n' Roll song called "Coffee, Whiskey & Rock'n Roll". But pay attention to their version for "Losing My Religion" (an old R.E.M.'s song, an exclusive bonus track for the CD version of the album).
The musical work of SAINTED SINNERS is really great, and "Taste It" is really very good. But the band must work with a better sonority in the future (maybe recording with their organic regulation and using modern techniques in a better way would make it great).
