Vriess - Vriess album cover

Conceptions in music can become trouble if the fan is not able to understand some differences by the ears. These words mean that one sees a label as 'Death Metal' or 'Metalcore' and can't link the words to the music, and this is the reason for some calling bands for a genre that they're not. As an example, some call SOILWORK as 'Metalcore' sometimes, or even 'Modern Metal'. And maybe one can make the same mistake when hearing to "Vriess", the first release of the French band VRIESS.

They're called as a Deathcore band, and the label isn't fair with the duet's music. It's a type of modern Death Metal with influences from Deathcore and Metalcore, but being nastier and aggressive in a Death Metal trend, not in a modern one. It's filled with aggressiveness and not excessively overloaded with modern aspects. It's really good, filled with energy, and with a massive and nasty energy. The production worked in a way to create a massive and aggressive sound quality, where the band's music can be expressed in the best way. But of course things were done carefully to be clean and defined as well, but maybe a better set of instrumental tunes could be a better choice. It's very good, but could be better.

They have a very good work, as stated on the five songs. So the best to assimilate their work is to heard to "Chapter I: The Fight" and "Chapter II: The Curse" (with charming contrasts between brutal aspects with modern ones, but be prepared for a massive rhythmic blow given by bass guitar and drums), "Chapter III: The Reality" (the contrasts of rhythms are very good, fed by nasty guitars), and to "Chapter IV: The Reborn" and "Chapter V: The Father" (where some of modern Metal traces are clear to the hears, and  the use of screamed nasty tunes is a fine choice for the vocals). It's not so difficult to hear all the songs.

For now, the duet shows potential to sail into unknown waters, so let's hope that VRIESS can do it. "Vriess" is just the beginning...
