Eighty Years War
Caedere
Released July 23, 2021, "Eighty Years War" is an album about the history of Dutch war. CAEDERE masterfully interweaves death metal, with the classic undertones of bleakness and dying. This is their third release following their two previously released albums. "Eighty Years War" tells the story of a war that raged from 1568-1648, the Dutch War of Independence; a war that released the Low Country of Spanish rule. Yet this album isn't all death and Death Metal. There are Extreme Metal parts deeply embedded within. A mix that creates an angry darkness, apt for an album about the ravages of war. CAEDERE describes themselves as a mixture of US Blast Death Metal and Swedish old-school Death Metal. Truly they are brutal, dark, and melancholic.
"Iconoclasm" - Tortured and dark, the classic Death Metal vocals are offset by the background vocals that have a more Extreme Metal sound. With marching tremolo beats on the guitar. This is a fast song, easily carrying the weight of the war tones. "Inquisition" - The Extreme Metal background vocals are heavily present in this song. Poignantly adding flavor to the deeply classic Death Metal style. With fast drumming and raging guitar, this song does not leave you room to catch your breath.
"Council of Blood" - Opening with the classic Pig Squeal, and leading into some really heavy drums, this is not a song for the faint of heart. But then again, it is about war and blood. I don't think it was intended to be nice. Harsh and scathing it is! Yet there is a spot just before the two-minute mark where the guitar slows down a little in cadence. "The Siege (of the long breath)" - A dark name, but it is a song about dying. By title alone it lends your mind thoughts of one's final breath. This whole album masterfully tells this dark story. Artful mixtures of rage and sound. This song too is chock full of tremolo on guitar and drum.
I would like to follow this up by mentioning the album artwork on "Eighty Years War" is of my favorite style in metal. Skulls and a violin. Sort of a romantic death type of visual nuance. CAEDERE has touched the hearts of many old school Death Metalers. This classic album is guaranteed to be a favorite of at least a few of you out there reading this.
