Caliban - Zeitgeister album cover

When Modern Metal genres appeared, a clash between the old and the new generations of Metalheads started: the older ones couldn't accept such form, because they were extremely different from the past; the younger ones, without the mental constrains of the past, accepted the new forms. Maybe if one could throw in the garbage can the conceptions created throughout time, this one could enjoy a good time hearing modern Metal bands as the German quartet CALIBAN. "Zeitgeister", their new album, is really very good.

It seems that they change their lyrical approach: all their past releases had lyrics written in English, but now they sing in their own mother language, German (it seems that the main cause was their recording for RAMMSTEIN's "Sonne"). But if the fans pay attention, it's just a set of old songs, just sang on German (except for the new one, "nICHts"). Musically, it's that bitter and greasy form of music filled with Groove Metal and New Metal influences, balancing brutal aggressive parts with charming melodic moments. The formula is the same used by many, but in their hands, things are filled with and intense and aggressive personality, along with a hooking set of melodies and it bleeds in energy. Yes, it's truly good, indeed.

Once more, the quintet worked with the producer Benjamin Richter (who works with them since 2007's "The Awakening"), to guarantee a massive and aggressive sound filled with those modern instrumental tunes that are usual. But besides such a feature, everything can be understood, and sounds clean and defined.

The album is really very good, and keeps their usual approach in Metalcore. The fans will love moments as the oppressive brutality of "Trauma" (that is "Arena of Concealment", and presents Matthi from NASTY as special guest), the contrasts between brutality and melodies of "Herz" (that is "I Will Never Let You Down"), the accessible and catchy approach used on "Ausbruch nach Innen" (that was called "Tyranny of Small Misery", and that presents a dynamic work on the guitars), and the catchy Groove tempos used on "Intoleranz" (the name refers clearly to "Intolerance", with a great work on bass guitar and drums on the rhythms and on the vocals on the screams) are the best of those remakes. And the new track, "nICHts" shows the same features of the band's classic style, but with some Industrial/Groove Metal clear touches, along with charming and accessible melodies.

Maybe "Zeitgeister" is showing a turning point in CALIBAN's career, no one can say it for sure. But everyone will have the certain notion that the album is really a good piece of Modern Metal.
