The limits between classic Doom Rock and Stoner Rock aren't so simple to trace sometimes, because many bands use a mix between both genres. Of course, both genres have separate ways of being, but as CATHEDRAL brought both united on "The Ethereal Mirror" age, many bands looked to blend the slow and funereal aspects of Doom Rock with the nasty sound and psychedelic approach of Stoner Rock. And even after many years, things are so good that a release as "Purple Flower, Garden Black", from Greek quartet BLACK JUJU can impress many fans.

They fuse the clean and defined forms of Doom Rock with the hard and psychedelic influences from Stoner Rock (taking influences from the 70's along with touches from MONSTER MAGNET), along with some tribal rhythmic touches and modern Hard Rock influences. Everything boils in a great cauldron, and the result is a personal form of music that respects the past, but creates a different way for the band. The energy and hooking melodies (that are accessible in some moments, as can be heard on "Venus Fly Trap") are really excellent. The production of the album fused the simple and organic set of instrumental tunes they use with a defined and clean format, what allows the band to express their music in a way that even a non-introduced listener will like it.

The tribal and introspective "Hiawatha" (what a smashing Doom weight can be heard on the guitars), the accessible and psychedelic Hard Rock song "Venus Fly Trap" (very good simple and radio orientated melodies, and fine vocals), the smashing bones weight of "Soulstealer", the contrasts between introspective and heavy parts shown on "Burn Me (When I Die)" (great work on the guitars once more), the psychedelic essence of "Acid King" (very good work on bass guitar and drums in conducting the slow paces), and the massive weight of "Flesh and Blood" are their best songs, although the album isn't so hard to listen to and like at all.

Give a chance to yourself and listen to "Purple Flower, Garden Black", because BLACK JUJU isn't just another name into their musical genre.
