Ignorance (Reissue)
Sacred Reich
Back in the 80's, the NWOBHM musical movement started to lose its energy, Thrash Metal came to the stage to lead things. The commercial praise that some bands of the First wave received made thing go to the next level, and some names arose to be the Second wave. Amongst them is SACRED REICH, from Phoenix (Arizona) that after a Demo Tape and appearing on "Metal Massacre" Vol VIII, released its first album, "Ignorance" on 1987. And now, this album is reissued in a remastered version.
In the beginning, their Thrash Metal way was extremely new, a fusion of the genre with aspects from Crossover and Hardcore, or in other words, they played furious and in an extremely aggressive ways for those days. But their work was always guided by a melodic aesthetics, using a very good set of melodies. But it was not what it would be in the future, but was enough to call the attention of the fans and to assemble legions of fanatics throughout the world. And still today, "Ignorance" sounds actual, strong and a great option.
Bill Metoyer, a known producer between North American Thrash Metal bands in the 80's, is the one who worked with the quartet on the studio as producer and sound engineer (and the band co-produced the album). The result is something savage, wild, aggressive and aesthetically crude, creating the right ambience for the songs. But it is defined and clean, allowing the fans to understand the band's work.
Musically, the band shows technical mastery in some parts (as can be heard on the instrumental intro of "Death Squad"), but their strongest point is the energy that comes from their songs. And "Death Squad" (with its aggressive guitar work), the fest tempos of "Victim of Demise" (very good technical parts from drums, indeed), the crushing weighty parts of "Ignorance" (another great moment from guitars), the contrasts between fast tempos and slower parts of "Violent Solutions", the Crossover/Thrash Metal appeal of "Sacred Reich" (where some melodies arise due the proximity with Heavy Metal), and the way-down speed of "Administrative Decisions", and these are the best ones. And as a bonus for this version, the version for "Ignorance" that was on "Metal Massacre" compilation.
To be honest, "Ignorance" can be considered as on very good breakthrough album, but it's far from their best shape. It sounds naïve for the level that SACRED REICH would show in the future, but it's a classic by now.
